Carport question

I have a 16X20 shop. After putting all my "stuff" in it there is just enough room to get a car halfway in to work on. The Mrs. and I have been mulling over our options and we both agree that a covered area (think carport over flatwork) adjacent to shop is the way to go both financially and functionally. My question is this, if I pour the flatwork first what would be my best way to attach said covering later on down the road? We are thinking a 24X24 pad (just flatwork) and then covering it with a metal roof later. Probably using cedar posts for support. I am also considering just buying a metal carport and placing that over it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we are really still in the planning stages.

First, put in the slab with adequate rebar and footings around the perimeter for strength.
Afterwards, you can decide what type of carport you want built. Be sure to consider the weather conditions in your area. Metal carport structures are good, if you choose a quality
built unit that can be adequately bolted to the slab.

What Cyberbear said. When we erect carports we come with wedge anchors or epoxy to attach to your slab. That being said not all carports are created equal. If it is only going to be a carport and not a closed in building later then I would have you pour the slab 6" or more on each side larger than the carport.

We've been thinking of adding a carport to our alley accessed rear driveway. It would be part shade for the west facing backyard and to quickly get the extra vehicles under cover during hail storms. Not sure if just a roof would be enough during a bad storm, concrete driveway is 25'wx50'l.

Never plan on enclosing it. Weather in Texas is nice enough 75% of the time.

Have you considered downsizing your "stuff"? It might save you in the long run if it is an option.
