My HVAC contractor is recommending a Carrier dual zone 2.5 ton mini split for my garage space and room above. I'm only familiar with Mitsubishi and Daikin. As well, he is the only contractor who says we need a hyper unit that has the capability of operation below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. We live in MD and while it does go below 30 not for extended periods of time. Since I have a sink in the garage and potentially a bathroom in the dormer above he is recommending a hyper unit. Any thoughts on the Carrier Mini-split?

The Carrier units are manuf by Toshiba on a private label basis. As a Carrier dealer he is all in on the product because he is required to do so. He is incorrect on the Hyper-heat need also. My Fujitsu units are rated to 5*f which in MD is sufficient for you. That is the rating for the Mitsubishi and Daikin’s too, within a few degrees. Either he doesn’t know products or he is BS’ing you because he is trying to earn points for a trip from Carrier. That is their promotional program.

Thanks for the confirmation on the Hyper-heat. A second HVAC company is recommending a Daikin unit never mentioned Hyper-heat. Just waiting for his estimate. On HVACdirect.com the Carrier unit sells for 4k, but their bid including labor was over 12k. and this is a straight forward job as I designed the area where the Unit/heads will go are easy. for connections. I also provided the electrical circuit to the unit. I was expecting a bid for a two zone unit all in closer to 8k.

Do the install yourself and have an hvac person come do the start up.
That's insane pricing.

Don't have time for the install as I need to finish up rough in plumbing, some framing for the mini-split head unit and insulation. Trying to wrap this up by year's end. The plumbing, framing, insulation are not a problem, so something has to be farmed out.

Farm out the plumbing, framing and insulation. Plumbers are paupers compared to your HVAC company!

I have seven splits including four Carriers (one cassette and three wall-mounts) and they have all been great. The oldest one is about 15 years old.

I'm not sure where the Carrier units are in the US are manufactured, but my units were manufactured in Thailand by Toshiba Carrier Thailand, a joint venture.

Make sure whatever you buy has copper coils.
