Just had the Lennox SLP98 installed. Wow this furnace is sweet. No noise, super comfort in the house, very happy with it. Thanks for all the replies.

I'm a tech at a Carrier factory authorized dealer and my suggestion on what to get is...

...go with the company that has the best installer reputation. Seriously. I'd take a cheap Goodman installed by a great installer who properly handled load calculations and air balancing issues over the fanciest Carrier Infinity installed by hackmonkeys.

At this point they're all pretty close, reliability wise. Brands like Goodman or Armstrong may cheap out on small things like ignitors or pressure switches, but for the most part there's not much difference. I will say that I really like my new Carrier 59 though. No more crappy mild-steel HXers anyway.

Also, consider what supply houses are in your area. If the nearest Lennox supplier is 300 miles away and the Lennox dealer doesn't have a part, you're SOL until they get it.

EDIT: Derp, I see you already had yours put in. Enjoy it! Nothing like that new furnace smell ;)

I have always trusted Carrier as a brand and they never failed me. :)

You`re time is coming.LOL
I would`nt waste my money on either one of those over priced POS
Get a Goodman.
Cheaper up front.
You can get parts.
Easy to work on.
Good warranty.

If you plan doing the repairs and maintenance you need to stay away from Lennox. Only "authorized" dealers are able to obtain parts which are all proprietary. Carrier is not as bad but overpriced.

You should consider Goodman. Very simple and parts are readly available to anyone. If you have a Johnstone near you check it out.

I second this, great warranty coverage too.

I'm in this same boat. The a/c took a dump last fall. I waited until getting our tax return. We have a 15 year old 2 story suburban 1800 sq ft house. We have a goodman now. I have a guy coming from a trane dealer this week.. He said it would be over 10 k to get into Trane and variable speed blower, etc. 5to 10 k for a Tempstar system that they label as their own house brand. I am thinking about estimates from Trane Carrier and Lennox b/c of the installation companies, if I'm not crazy about them, I will keep looking I guess. I know that installers are a lot of what's important.

I'm am partial to Ducane myself.
Ducane used to be an actual manufacturer(noy sure if they still are)till lennox bought them years ago and really screwed up supply/management side of company in my opinion anyway,Thats when I quit selling them.
Their air conditioning side was actually made by coleman/evcon in the past who was a manufacturer for lots of other companies like ducane was.
Of the 100s of ducane furnaces and condensors I installed from early 90s to around 2004 I think I warranteed maybe 2-3 hot surface igniters,no other issues .
:D
