As with most I have been a Garage Journal member for a number of years (~8 I believe) and have amassed numerous ideas along the way. Many of these ideas have been fully planned waiting on implementation and now is the time. I finally sourced a builder after realizing I did not have the time to complete the project myself and will be breaking ground on my garage on Tuesday (9/6/2016).

Original plans were for a 40'x40'x12' with full attic trusses and a 40'x12' porch/lean-to along one side. As with most things funds were an issue and I wanted a building that fit with the size of my house and lot. So after talking with my builder I down sized to a 32'x32'x12' with 6/12 storage trusses and a full 12'x32' porch. Part of the porch will be a 12'x12' enclosed room that will be used as a night shift sleeping area/office for me as I work a rotating shift and have three young kids. Not a very conducive environment for sleeping to say the least. I have attached the Sketchup renderings to give an idea of my plan.

I have much more planned but will update here as those come to fruition. As far as budget I have $40K allocated to get the building dried in, get the main electrical installed, and hopefully get the night shift room functional. I will try to keep everyone updated on how the budget is holding up.

More to come.....

Cool, and later you can box in the porch and use it to store car parts :)

Plans are actually to add another 24'x24' wood working area onto the back of the building when funds recover from this build. The porch was the wife's idea as she wants to add a pool to that side eventually. (Totally against my will but I had to agree to get the go ahead on the garage.)

Here is the build site. We currently own ~4 acres in Northwest Alabama. We love the lot and location but plan on upgrading the house with time as it is small for our family of 5. I have currently been spending my evenings cleaning up some trees that were in the way of the build. The garage will go on the crest of the hill to the left of the house.. The second picture is taken from the build site (you can see the corner stakes in the picture). Sorry for the bad quality photos. My camera is currently MIA.

Good stuff! i would recommend liberal use of horiizontal and vertical rebars as well as core-filling all of the block even if it cost a little more.

All block work and plumbing is done. Should be backfilling with gravel on Monday and pouring slab on Tuesday. Only hold up right now is the truss manufacturer. They should have them ready to arrive on the 20th of September.uploadfromtaptalk1473466425884.jpg

I had the slab poured this week. The concrete contractor did an excellent job and I was very impressed with their work. That is saying a lot coming from someone who is hard to satisfy and prefers doing their own work. The slab was cut before any cracks appeared (we were worried since it was 100°F the day of the pour and no clouds in sight). I kept it wet for about 24 hours afterwards and could not find a single low spot anywhere. We ended up with 6000 psi mix with fiber. Don't have any pictures but I did form in pads for a two post lift that are 3'x3'x12" in the left bay. Trusses are still on order but hopefully will be in next week.uploadfromtaptalk1474061834573.jpg

I also got the conduit ran to the house for electrical, internet, and cameras and put an order in for wire today. I'll be doing a 100 amp sub panel fed off the main panel in the house.

Well the trusses showed up on schedule but the framing crew was behind. They arrived this morning to start framing and made pretty good progress. No complaints with the crew as they worked hard all day long. Did notice after the concrete pour that the plumber had installed the bathroom plumbing in the wrong configuration from what was discussed and will cause the bathroom to take up more space in the right bay. I'm not totally happy with the setup but he had his reasons for doing what he did.20160928_173704.jpg20160928_175204.jpg

The crew will be setting the trusses tomorrow and continuing on with framing the porch area. I grabbed a few snapshots tonight before I headed to work but the light was horrible. I will try to get some better ones later. Tomorrow I'll be pulling the electrical service and installing the load center.20160928_175215.jpg

If you need a ramp, make sure it is not too steep !

Or rig up some way to pull disabled vehicles into the garage by yourself. (Lifting eye into a thread coupler or floor anchor pot in the floor and a come-a-long are cheap.)

Yeah I have plans to add some chain pots in the future. The ramp will be steep but not as bad as it looks in the pictures.

This week's progress:

Roof was finished on Saturday but I don't have pictures yet. All that's left for my builder is finishing the plumbing and pouring the front apron. I will be responsible for the siding and garage doors.

It has been a while since I've done some updates. Spent about two months working straight nights so I haven't had much time to make progress. Luckily I had my night shift room functional for most of that time.

Siding was finished up and doors were installed last week. The outside is buttoned up and I finished the floors with Legacy's HD40. I have been slowly working on electrical and getting a feel for the space. Also got some chirt down for a driveway base. Lighting is also up. I bought 6, 6-bulb high bay fixtures on sale several years ago I had put back. They are eye searingly bright but I don't think I have my spacing just right yet.

Floors before:

Floors after:

Doors:

The color of the siding seems off in the pictures for some reason. It looks more white in person.

Spent some time making sure my lift placement was what I expected. I've laid out all of my plans for equipment layout in painters tape before I finalize.

Just a quick update. I haven't been on here in forever because I have been spending all of my free time working on the garage. The interior is coming along nicely. A/c is in and functioning, lift is in place, all electrical is done, but I still have to insulate and put up the ceiling. I hope to start on workbenches etc in the near future. Here is a quick sneak peak. I'll try to post more soon.78ef7a486fac0872a319aa673d68a6b9.jpgf78e580220ecc6d3daf2ff1fa22356c5.jpg4191eae382a66280d8300209a5fae15a.jpg
