I've traded on a few occasions and I always wondering why folks would ask outrageous amount for trade??

Example:

10K cash for car, 15k on trade.

My guess is they want to discourage trades and/or they know people are going to say, "My 72 Maverick is worth $10,000! It has $4,000 worth of audio gear in it alone!"

Personally, I'd let them keep all the **** I don't want like the stereo, wheels and tires and lets talk the stuff that matters! Any idiot with credit and a signature can buy wheels, tires and stereo.

I've ran into the same thing and refuse to deal with someone that participates in such a practice.

On very few occasions do I need cash for something, I am always open to trades. The value of my item is the value of my item whether selling or trading. If I don't want to trade and item I post as such and then just ignore trade offers.

I've had people offer me trades before. Then I am still in the same situation. I have to sell their **** to still get my cash.

Almost everything I sell is open to a cash offer, trade, or combo of cash & trade. I try to open as many avenues as possible to move my item. But if I take something on trade, there's the extra hassle of having to detail/fix/advertise/sell the trade-in. So IMO the trade-in needs to be worth substantially more than the cash value of the item I was selling.

Exactly. You've got to cover your time and costs disposing of the trade in.

If they can't sell it for what you're asking for your item/vehicle, then maybe neither can you. Anyone asking you to take a trade, thus take a risk, take on work they won't do, defer payment, has to pay substantially for the services rendered.

The most common one around here is the guy who wants half of retail for his Snap-on tools and box and "will not separate, $15,000 cash only." He doesn't want to do the labor of selling the individual tools and sets, but doesn't want to discount enough so someone else can. As far as I know, I've never seen that strategy succeed.

That always bugged me too. I got this for trade and you got that for trade. If I think they are about equal somewhere in value...it's a deal. I can say mine is worth whatever I feel like quoting. In the end, if you want the other item...just trade for the damn thing!

I've done a lot of trading over the years, especially guns. Most of the time I did very well and in some cases came out way ahead of a cash deal. On cars I've done it both ways and I prefer to trade in as you only pay tax on the difference (at least in my state). YMMV.

Lets say I've got a $10,000 car to sell and want to get a 4x4 pickup to replace it. If somebody offers a 4x4 pickup worth about $10,000 or so depending on how close it fits what I want then a fairly even trade makes sense. If somebody offers $10,000 wholesale value worth of dog food than thats a big no...I'd need more like $15,000 worth of dog food since I have no dog.

People do this because they realize most others' sense of value is totally screwed up. They need to receive what the other person considers $15k in trade, to get a realistic $10k value.

Personally I rarely consider trades. The onlyl time I do is the rare occasion when I know I am going to lose money on a deal, so I might as well see what people have and see if I can work a deal to minimize my loss.

.

While this does happen, I don't believe this is the real reason. As others have said, if I take something on trade then I have to dispose of it to get my cash. And some risk comes with that and well as time and hassle. I don't think any person who takes a trade even considers what the trader "claims" his junk is worth. The higher amount simply represents an additional fee to cover the hassles of taking a trade, rather than taking cash.

Most people always think their junk is worth gold bars when actually it is only worth steel scrap prices. These are the ones you don't do trades with no matter the cost.

I only do a trade if the trade is worth more than what I'm asking for my item. Unless it's a trade that I actually need and will keep. Otherwise I have to resell the trade, and that takes time/money.
