Someone suggested I'd do better posting this question in the Vintage Section, so here it is . . .

As usual, the Sig-O found an interesting tool recently.

We know it's a file handle and that such were made by several companies with the most common being Durbin-Durco and E.C. Stearms. This handle does not match their styles and the "S" shape that comprises part of iron work on both sides is obvious and ought to help in identifying . . . but not for us.

I figured since there was a Thread dealing with Japanning file handles this wasn't to far a stretch to include it a a Garage Tool question. Anyone know anything about it?

Can't tell you who made that one if doesn't have any markings, but I love those things (especially hose with the "T" thumbscrew. Nice vestiges of original paint. The "S" could be for "Stearns" (E.C. Stearns, Syracuse, New York), but I have never seen that particular style of cast iron file handle before. Whatever it is, it's cool!

It's a fine tool. We're pretty sure that it's neither Durbin-Durco or E.C. Stearns. You can be sure we'll be on the lookout for them hereafter.

I don’t know who made it either. I dug mine out for a comparison but although similar at the attachment end, the handle itself is quite different. IMG_8662.jpeg
Here is another one marked General that I found on Thursday at an estate sale.

I am always on the lookout for any of these I see.

Possibly Simonds? I just looked through a few of their old 1920s catalogs. They sell files, but I did not see any handles. I did see Simonds logos with the letter S that's oversized and shaped kind of like the one in your handle. It says the logo was used on files.

Only other handles I’ve found in S named companies have been wooden, or non existent. Sargent, Stanley, Sandusky, Simonds so far
