Im in the planning stages for the heat of my shop that's under construction.

I have been looking at all the boiler styles, and part of me wants to go old school simple and just put a lower efficiency cast iron boiler in.

My question is, do people put these in for new construction or just the retrofits?

There are many cast iron boiler still sold. Many people think that the service needed for a high efficiency, modulating condensing boiler vs that of the CI lower efficiency option lead them to the CI. You are in, ohhh a pretty cold area (I worked on the tar sands in '77) and when you consider the 10-15% efficiency difference, the service side becomes less of an issue. The key, and I am in the wall hing boiler business is to set the unit up correctly. That means care in the installation and start-up. Use the proper cleaners on your brand new system. Use the approved glycols, if you are using glycol, and maintain it. Get out of the blocks correctly and the service needs of a wall hung hi eff. unit is manageable.

Are you going to do this installation yourself? If so, try to get to one of the training programs offered by the manuf. It will be worth the time. IF you are contracting the job out, listen to the contractor.

I work away so I will not be home for half the time so im after a simple plain jane reliable unit. that why I was thinking a cast iron unit.

years ago when I was a plumber we used to install lots of trinity NTi boilers and they were nice, but expensive.

Another thing to consider with a condensing boiler is the condensate off of the burner is highly corrosive. So care needs to be taken with condensate pumps and drain lines.
