Cast tub

Holy Mother of God, I must have never moved one in all the years. I am waiting on something for my crane and finally got it drag out the door where I can get at it with a forklift or loader. I was wondering what held it in, its own weight. The floor was no way designed for that and the live load of people and water. I would say north of at least 300 lbs, no way no less, probably closer to 4.

I have been postponing some plumbing work, now got 3 bathroom remodels going to start. I need to hire another guy.

When I built my first house 40 years ago I had 3 friends maneuver a 450# cast iron tub to the second floor bathroom. I couldn't do that again.

If it is coming out and not being saved a sledge hammer is your best friend. Wear eye protection and take it out in buckets.

Throw an old blanket or something in it and have at it with a 12lb. sledge,helps to keep some of the debris from flying around.

Yeah, I near broke My back rasslin a cast tub out the back door. After I was done, a buddy who is a plumber stopped by. He said, "oh, yeah, forgot to tell Ya, cover it with a blanket and sledge hammer it!". He thought it was funny.

If it is cast, it will break.

At my son's house, they double the floor joists. That would have been fine, except one of the doublers was rotten from water leaking past the crappy sliding shower door and vinyl flooring. Now its a triple !

It may go back in, don't know yet but tearing the floor up now. It leaked some along the wall, going o fix any damage and figure where to go from there. A 1 piece fiberglass would save a lot of work here.

A few years ago I hauled one out of the bathroom, down stairs and out into the garage and refinished it. Then back outside, in the house and upstairs.
It was a handfull for myself and three teen sons, but the results were worth it.
It has August 1910 cast into the bottom.

I learned something when my son remodel his master bathroom. The tub was on the narrow wall directly across from the door. It appeared to be an exact fit between the walls.

In reality, the width of the bathroom was 2-3" wider than the length of the tub. Once the tub was in place and level, 2x4 were cut to "shim" the existing studs out so that the drywall would by flat with the end of the tub.

They ring like a bell when you smack em hard with a sledge too! Heaviest thing I had to move was the cast heating matrix out of the ancient gas boiler in our last house, I unbolted the four steel rods that held the individual cast sections together and pried them apart but even then I could only just lift each section into the wheelbarrow to take them out.

Around 1981, I had a buddy that lived in an apartment that was across the street from a Seniors Rest Home, more of a hospital really. I dont know why, but for about a month there was an old cast tub sitting in the hallway, we could see it thru the double glass doors. Getting ready (drinking) for a triple kegger party that night we decided we needed that tub to put the kegs in. This was a scene right out of Animal House, 8-10 drunken fools, slipping into the facility with a truck backed up on the lawn 6 feet from the doors. With 1 guy at the end of the hall as a lookout, the rest of us lifted that fricken thing, laughing our asses off and spirited it out the doors to the waiting get away vehicle. Now, if you think moving one of those is a *****, try lifting it 4 1/2 feet into a pickup. I could have swore I heard half a dozen testicles explode. Got it to the party, the next day we decided there was no way in hell we were gonna move it again, sooo... we dug a hole and turned it into a pond, where it remains to this day, in an anonymous backyard, somewhere in Santa Ana, Ca.

Shucks, its only a lil ol tub! We had one of those that was original to 1949, the sawzall eliminated the plumbing to it and SWMBO and I slid it out. Almost 400 lbs, but it slid easily on the hardwood and tile floors on its side to the front porch. We cheated after that tho and let the local scrapper load it from there.

Just removed one from my brothers condo in Chicago, via mini sledge. I definitely threw a blanket over it and carried it out in pieces.
