Caster blow outs

Is this common? It happened last week on my Griots Garage rolling seat. I have had it a long time (probably 15 years), but it doesn't see tons of use and I'm under 200 lbs.

Then tonight I go out to the garage, flip on the Olympics and go to pull one of my rolling bin bolts, and it has a flat. By the time I wrestle it away from the wall, 3 of 4 casters have crapped out. These casters were very inexpensive (HD store closing) and light duty. I've had them probably 10 years. They have been under rather heavy load, but almost never moved.

It doesn't surprise me. I have some cheap box store casters that are falling apart. I'm convinced that the casters sold in box stores are garbage - or at least are only suitable for limited applications which the product descriptions fail to elaborate on. After a little research and shopping for a more specific caster application I recently had I was amazed at how many different wheel materials there are and how much engineering criteria goes into caster selection. I'm only going to go through a commercial caster supplier anymore - Somewhere with technical personal to help me make the best choice.

I've seen exactly what you're talking about, especially with polyurethane wheels. Seems like they're working one minute and the next they're shedding their skin.

I've found a good source for quality (IMO) casters via eBay - you might look there for replacements:

That's a good idea for the rolling seat. I'm afraid my bolt bin is far too heavy for that. It didn't roll easily before the wheels delaminated.
