Caster wheel dimensions help.

Need help finding casters to replace the cruddy wheels on the newer style shop vacs. I can't seem to determine exactly what would fit vacuum. I have a grip stem length of 1-1/2", seems to be 1/4" diameter, and wheel diameter of 2".
Has anyone ordered replacement casters somewhere they can recommend?

What's the diameter of the stem at the wider portion next to the base? 7/16'' perhaps?

The widest part near the base mic's at .295 which is very near 9/32". So it's a bit smaller than 7/16".

1949 caddyman I suppose i could thread in a threaded stem and call it good so long as they don't back out.

I totally forgot about McMaster Carr. I'm gonna check there right now.

Not the widest part, but that little swelled section above the widest part. That's how the caster companies are sizing their stem diameters. I believe it's probably because it's the grip section that fits into the socket.

My first go to for castors is McMaster-Carr. You can also try Granger or a local material handling supply house.

If you get stuck, can you install a threaded insert in the houseing and get a 1/4-20 stem caster and thread it in. Or drill through if feasable and put a washer and nut on it.? I am always looking for work arounds with simple hardware I may have around.

Mount your shop vac on a modified Harbor Freight moving dolly. Much, much sturdier caster and far more affordable in the $10.00 neighborhood for 4 castors and plenty of sturdy wood to complete the job. A little imagination, labor and 4 screws for attachment and you are there. I have used this method with great success.
