I’m a complete newb when it comes to lifts but I’m considering a 4-poster in the 7–12K# range. I note some can be had with casters. That would be mighty handy but I wonder about the stability of an unanchored lift, especially one on wheels. If I’m putting a couple tons of automotive iron over my head, I want to make sure it gets there and stays there! So I’ll appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with wheeled lifts.

The lift is not permanetly resting on the casters. I don't have them on mine but from pictures, they are usually in a raised positon when the lift is being used and lowered only for moving the lift. I believe they are only available on the lower weight lifts.

The casters are attached to the frame and ramps that raise up, and when it comes down, they strike the floor and raise the legs and lower frame structure off the floor.

I have an 8k (4 tons) 4 post with casters, is fine and stable. Lots of on line videos showing in use. Short version: you only install casters to move 4 post assy, with or without car on board. When using casters/installed, lowering lift, to near botton, lifts legs ~ 1/2 inch only and voila, move assy whereever.
