Cat box in the garage ...

Previous owner of our house put a cat door in the wall between the house and garage and built a "cabinet" on the other side with the cat litter box in it. Results were mixed, but at least it wasn't in the house, and most of the problems I think were due to poor construction and lack of planning. I ripped it out after one of our male cats made it clear he wasn't even trying to aim, but my wife then took over a whole bathroom that I kind of miss having, so I am giving some thought to "doing it right".

We live in an area where outside cats last about 6 months on average, traffic, other cats and owls, coyotes, a real snowball IV type place so outside is not an option.

Heart of the thing would be a LitterMaid self cleaning box. http://www.amazon.com/LitterMaid-LME9000-Advanced-Automatic-Self-Cleaning/dp/B000H6AK7A/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1196367068&sr=8-4

And some kind of convenient to clean enclosure, as in count the cats, lock the cat door from inside the house, and hose it out from time to time, as well as routine adding litter and bagging the waste. Power would be required for the LitterMaid AC adapter, and an exhaust fan of some kind.

Ah... I've thought of this one, but if I took the litter-box out of my wife's office, she would NEVER clean it. We have a Littermaid now and it's pretty good, but required about 2 empties per week (we have 2 fuzzy-****-machines).

If you have an option for water, I would check out THESE which NEVER require cleaning:

I made it a condition of my wife buying a cat, that she cleans up after it. I would say, six months and your problems are over :wtf:.

She keeps telling me one of the monsters is "mine", but generally manages all the cat activities herself. I just want the bathroom back. ;)

Not to offend...and I can't stand cats...so I think a few well placed SHOTS would solve the cat box problem once and for all. :)

Filthy, nasty, pointless, creatures...

The cat box in the garage is a great idea. It's too bad for the cats that the garage is 30 feet from the house and it's near -20 C today.

Wife brought home a gorgeous black persian who would sit in litter box with his **** hanging over the side and **** on the floor. So we got 2 litter boxes thinking he was too fussy for one,So he crapped in between the two. Put up with this for 15 yrs until we had to put him too sleep. No more friggin cats

Never have understood the bad feelings some people have for cats... To each his own, I guess...

I have two. Older one is my black lab's best friend. They curl up together and the cat follows the dog around the house. She (the cat) sort of stays to herself otherwise. But will come lay on the bed at night.

The younger cat - Diesel - is a trip. He lays on the ottoman to watch TV. Sits there through the whole show, watching intently. Comes to talk to me in the morning when I get up and follows me around like a dog a lot of the time.

My garage is detached, so I cannot quite do the setup that is being discussed here. But I am planning in my next round of renovations to put a cat door in a wall into a closet so that I can at least keep the litter box out of sight. Right now it is in the corner of the unused bedroom. But with renovations it will end up getting used more.

Gremlin the Engineering Felinus Americanus says CATS RULE, mere humans drool!

You got any questions he will be happy to claw you a plan of understanding.

He also says anybody who has a feline pissin all over the place ought to get the cat to the vet because it's probably a urinary tract infection.

Put a cat door into the garage and another in the outside wall.Outside build a wire enclosure with a drain style concrete pad underneath.Run the drain into your existing sewer line and a handy hose takes care of the rest. You can build the enclosure with a solid wall or two but be sure you use a covering like a plastic wall used for cheap shower enclosures.Spray it down with bleach before hosing it out.

My wifes cat has been in my garage twice since July both times she got locked in there for a few hours, Nobody knew she had gotten in there. Now she stay's out just like the wife and kids do. That is my hiding place not anyone else's.

Wife's outside cat accidentally got in my shop one time and stayed in there overnight.
After opening the shop up the next day and discovering this; I "dealt" with this transgression in a "firm matter"; now cat will not go anywhere near me. :headscrat

BTW, I don't like cats......
