I wanted to see if anyone had CAT brand tools in their boxes. I had my SO guy quote me on a 1/4" set and I ended up buying one from my local Caterpillar dealer at half the cost. From what I have seen CAT outsources to several companies including SO, and Williams. I paid about 50% of what SO would cost. Just wanted feedback if anyone has them.

Got some Cat branded pliers but if you look closely, you can see Snap on's trademark "S" on the bolt in the combination pliers. I got these cheap from eBay so I can't comment on what cat charges vs SO for these but they're definitely made by SO

You probably won't see them for cheap much longer with this guy around:

Speaking of that particular Ebayer, he needs his *** kicked.

Some one likes to make stuff up in their item descriptions.

i like cat tools because the pawn shops have a hard *** time looking them up for reference prices. they just assume its worthless next to nothing brand and mark it really low priced like my long flex head 1/2" ratchet i paid $21 for

Seriously, stuff like that ticks me off to no end.

"This is a hard to find EDITION."

Yeah, sure, you friggin jackass. Go crawl in a hole and die. Take your ill gotten funds and "special edition" with you.
Yeah right, "hard to find Edition". My cat dealer has ten on the shelf for $48.75.

I'm curious...just because CAT tools are made by Snap On, does this mean they are exactly the same? Is it the same tool steel, same hardness, same processing, same Q.C., etc?

Many consumer brands are made by the same contractual manufacturing plant, but they're made to varying standards of quality and materials.

In my digging some of the CAT part #s specifies a supplier part #. Such as SO. I was going to get some of the hard handle screwdrivers which are SO. The ratchets are obviously williams which is a SO subsidy. Those sockets look like regular SO's though. If they had CAT dual 80 rats i'd have them all.

Man that 1/4" set looks awesome... just like Snap-On. The ratchet looks like a Williams. If you don't mind me asking, what did the sockets cost?

I have a set of CAT wrenches:

Per the parts manager at my local store anything can be purchased over the counter as long as it is paid in advance. I scrolled through the handtool book and probably 75% was available through their main distribution hub for next day delivery with no shipping cost. Wow, I wait at least a week if my tool guys order it.
As far as warranty; pay attention to it when you buy. If it is lifetime (most likely snapon, Williams, etc) it's just as easy. Bring to counter tell'em its broke and they will give or order you a new one.
I'm sure I'll test this shortly and will update you guys with my experience.

You have to order almost everything at my dealer and it is a huge dealership. If you want Snap-On then buy Snap-On because CAT tools really aren't that much cheaper. If you're a regular customer then I'm sure they'll wheel and deal, other wise your paying retail.

That Ratcheting screwdriver for example cost just abut as much as the Snapon version. So unless you have a Cat fetish, stick to snappy.

Sorry to dredge up these old threads but I have been collecting 1/4" drive spinner handles and ratcheting screwdrivers. I got a CAT ratcheting screwdriver last year but was still looking for the CAT 1/4" drive spinner. A Google search found this thread and I had to respond to a few posts.

I have a sole CAT 1/4" spinner handle. Just like my Snap-on ones, it's quite nice.

Went to my local CAT dealer today. They gladly ordered one for me, P/N 9S-1722 - $24, from the distribution center (think it is in Denver). It will be at my dealer tomorrow morning, no charge for shipping. $24 is cheaper than Snap-on pricing, I get it quicker and no shipping charge.

CAT must have a pretty amazing parts distribution system.

Walked in to my CAT dealer today and ordered the spinner. They were more than helpful. Not sure about the warranty.

if you think about the millions of people that have CAT equipment, when something breaks you go to the dealer and you need the part asap so in order for that to happen CAT has to have a very good system in order for them to be successful.

I think at our dealership it's something like 95% of Cat parts are either on hand or can be had within 1 day with no freight. Generally, worse case scenario is 2 days out. There are some that are 3-4 days out but not often. If the customer wants to pay the freight, we can get it in a day.

Can anyone confirm if the the 3 piece yellow handled pliers that CAT currently offers are in fact still snap on made as they do not appear to be in the PDF catalog.

Let's get a list of the USA stuff from CAT.

CAT's part system is very good and most tools can be with you in two days. The plier set you mention is made by Snap On and in the USA.

Most of the CAT hand tools are made in the USA and are currently a mix of Snap On & JH Williams. I have a lot of older CAT tools from the 80's and 90's and they are Snap On & Proto rebrands.

The CAT pliers set is P/N 233-1639 on page #184 of the 2013 CAT Tools & Supplies catalog. Warranty is listed as lifetime. I private messaged you the link to this PDF catalog. The catalog can be downloaded here: http://pdf.cat.com/cda/files/2905803/7/PECJ0003-04_web.pdf

Thank you for that, it does however appear that they are different than what is posted earlier in this thread that is why I wanted to see if anyone on here has any hands on experience so I don't waste time and money and end up with the 10% re stocking fee at my nearest CAT dealer.

From the picture in the PDF they sure look like SO to me, case, cardboard and all. The locking pliers below them definitely are. And if I am thinking correctly SO ones are rebranded gripons

I see what you are saying. I think the SO ones on the Ebay listing are just the new style slip joint with the 3 positions. The ones on the cat site seem to be the older SO slip joints and look identical to mine. My slip joint was the only one out of my set to be black oxide.
Edit: Just noticed the ebay ones also have the new high leverage diagonal cutters. The pivot is closer to the tip. As far as the needle nose I can not tell if they are both the talon grip ones or not.

If you're really into tractor rebranded tools and can't find a CAT dealer try a Case dealership. My local Case dealer has a bunch of stuff that appears to be rebranded SO and Williams tools. Including a tractor themed Heritage tool box.

New Holland has some SO stuff too. I have a set of New Holland soft handle screwdrivers and a New Holland ratcheting screwdriver. Nice thing about the New Holland ratcheting screwdriver is that it is black instead of that goofy blue/green Williams color.

Snap On products for Case and New Holland are mainly made in Taiwan. The ratcheting screwdriver, punch set are made in the USA.

Most of CAT's hand tools are made in the USA and are a mix of Snap On and Williams these days.

Anyone ever seen the CAT ratcheting screwdriver that's the same as the snap on version as opposed to the Williams style handle? When i look their ratcheting screwdriver up on the website it shows the snap on version but the one they sell is the Williams style. I know it's just me being picky but I kinda would prefer the snap on version. Also if anyone has one in nice shape they'd be willing to part with lemme know.

I've seen the actual Snap-On version on eBay several times but I don't think you'd like the prices they went for. :D
