What I bought, I bought at the beginning of Covid… so, your miles may vary…

The regular combination wrenches are rebranded Williams USA, the 1/4” and 3/8” metric 6pt regular sockets (my picture shows 13mm in 1/4” and 3/8”) look like Snap-on with different stamping, a pick that I got there is just plain Snap-on branded Snap-on (and it was cheaper than the Snap-on list price), the ratcheting screwdriver and other screwdrivers look like Williams and Snap-on hard handles.

When I originally looked at the ratcheting screwdriver, they showed it in Snap-on shape. I wish that I had found these tools before they changed the ratcheting screwdriver shape. I probably would have looked into buying a Case IH one and a New Holland one… but both of those also changed over to the Williams shape.IMG_4354.jpegIMG_4355.jpegIMG_4356.jpegIMG_4358.jpeg

The 1/4” 6pt deep sockets also look like Snap-on with different roll stamping. The ones in my picture are 10mm.

The 1/4” spinner handle looks like a Williams black hard handle.

The 22mm ratcheting wrench is NOT USA. It is made in Taiwan. I did not buy the CAT ratcheting wrench set because I have the Williams 10-19mm SUPERCOMBO set.

Right. This is common in industrial businesses where they almost never sell to the average Joe walking in off of the street; their business model revolves around industrial accounts since not too many consumers own that product or want that service. 20+ year ago I went to a local hydraulic hose store to have some hoses made, and I needed to have a business account there; and of course I didn't. The guy had mercy on me and did it for cash to buy the shop lunch. I don't think it still is, but 30 years ago my LWS was like this- because at that time not too many homeowners had OA torches and welders, and they were used to businesses and typically net 30 billing. Decades ago, before the internet, McMaster Carr used to be the same way and didn't want to deal with individuals; IIRC I'd order stuff for personal use, use my CC, and have it shipped to my work address who also dealt with McM.
Fastenal has gone almost completely to this, because less than 1% of their business was from walk-ins.

Browsing their website, am I correct that they do not offer rebadged 1/2"-drive deep metric 6-point chrome sockets?
That's too bad... It's still pretty cool, but that would have been a game changer.

Weird. I never noticed that.

Looking at the catalog, I only see an SAE chrome 6-point deep 1/2" set. As for metric, I only see 1/2" deep in 6-point impacts or 12-point in chrome.

Yeah, I don't know what it is about 1/2" deep metric sockets, but Proto, Wright, and Williams only offer them in 12-point. Snap-on will sell you 6-points, but for about $50 per socket.

Thanks for double checking!

That set shows $100.79 for me. BTW, their website suks. The pictures don't match the descriptions on alot of items.

I thought these sets used to come with a 47ACF (three position), but the current pictures look to me like the old 47ACP (black, 2 position). Big downgrade if so - does anyone know?

I think it's just a stock picture. It seems to be used on all the pliers sets.

Anyway... Another member recently picked up that set and it looks like a 3-position 47ACF to me.

Does anyone know if the universal impact sockets are USA made (Snap on)? Can’t seemingly tell from the website what is USA vs potentially offshore Williams.

Are you talking about these wobble/swivel sockets?

The catalog doesn't say, but the pictures actually show the older version of the Snap On, which are USA made (see example screenshot).
The Williams are a different design.

My OCD is acting up. I wouldn't want socket sets unless the shallow and deep size ranges matched. And looks like Cat tools only matches the size ranges in 3/8" drive chrome (8-19mm). The 1/4" and 1/2" drives have different size ranges for shallow and deep with no ability to order the missing ones individually to match the sets.

Funny - my OCD is fighting the same battles with their selection! Doesn’t look to me like they have 1/4” SAE 6 pt shallows (only 12 pt) which is making it hard for me to buy the the other sets (6 pt metric shallow and deeps and SAE deeps).

Actually, they have individual sockets listed in the catalog. I still can't say if they have every size covered, but I can try posting some screenshots if you know what you're looking for.

Just curious as the latest 2024 catalog I looked through does not show an equivalent to the LN46ACF or LN47ACF. Has anyone inquired with their local store if CAT has version yet?

I doubt it. At least anytime soon. But I need to get hands on a more recent catalog.

They offer impact sockets, but also have a second set of listings which specify flank drive. Does that imply the other listings don't have recessed corners...? Has anyone purchased the non-flank drive impacts?

The catalog says they're 30 and 36 tooth ratchets. The Williams JHWS-52EHA has a slightly different handle, but might be close otherwise.

So I'm looking at the Caterpillar dealer that's about 100 miles away in one of those cities that has traffic lights and all.

Evidently, I could buy tools through them, and there's talk on the site about a 'drop box' in the town I live in.

FULFILLMENT METHOD
DROP BOX TRUCK

So what is that exactly?

Does anyone know who makes this wrench set? It's the 1U-5545 set, 14 pieces, sized 6mm-19mm.

I don't know if the picture on the website is just a stock photo, but it kind of looks they might have the pac-man logo stamped and they seem to be matte chrome. Again, not sure if this is actually what they look like or just a stock photo.

I've tried to find info on them, or actual pictures of the wrenches which would also be really great, and I can't seem to find much of anything. I saw Ecotec posted a pic above of wrenches, but I don't know if it's the same exact set/part number.

That's the great question, isn't it. Snap-on? Williams? Overseas Williams? A tricky matter.

I admit that the pliers set looks like something of a slam-dunk, I wish I needed more pliers.

I am at home now. I can go to take a couple pictures of that set.

I do not, with 100% surety, know if it is still the same set. I bought mine right before Covid when CAT tools were still the best deal in tools.

Mine have the fat and comfortable beams of Williams. They are a joy to use. They are much nicer than the old satin SUPERRENCH.

I took a couple pictures of my set. They are CAT branded Williams USA.IMG_4441.jpegIMG_4444.jpeg
Thanks for the additional pics Ecotech! Very nice looking wrenches, and very appealing. But are the pics you showed definately the 1U-5545 set? Or are the pics a different part number/set?

That's my thought with the pliers too - from what I've researched, they do indeed seem like a slam dunk, but I can't personally confirm it. I'll probably have to get a set, plus maybe an extra pair of the needle nose.

So, I have been trying to order the full set of metric short pattern combination wrenches… but the website is a nightmare to navigate… even if you have a digital copy of the catalog (thank you ADHD!).

I gave up.

I have a mixed set of a couple different brands, and it is fine.

I have no idea. I wish that I had a better answer for you. The picture that you linked doesn’t look like the wrenches that I have. At least, I am not able to identify the part where the wrenches go from fat to skinny near the open end.

I may not be phrasing it well… but the wrenches in your picture do not look like Williams.

Oh gosh, I was already eyballing them and wanted to know more, but they do seem mighty appealing. I'm in the market for good set (or maybe two), that ideally wouldn't break the bank. Lot's of research, some misses on ebay, etc.

But thanks for the additonal info and response - this is like the only place I've really been able to find anything reliable about CAT tools. It's like a mini-game trying to see what exactly CAT has, and lot of it seems to be quite good stuff, at a fair price too. But the mystery is half the hunt, somewhat astonishing how little info there is out there (that've been able to find at least).

When I found this stuff before Covid, I felt like I found a cheat code. You could buy whole sets of CAT sockets for the price of 3 Snap-on sockets… and it looked just like Snap-on with different stamping.

Soon after I posted one of my purchases on Garage Journal, they took the vast vast majority of the tools off the catparts website. It had nothing to do with that. It was probably just a general backlog. People were at home and shopping.
