I found some good info on the IPCamTalk forums, including real-life video footage under various conditions which was really nice to see. Sensor size is generally more important
than megapixels, but check camera specs for the Lux ratings to have a better idea of low-light performance.
But the security camera setup can be another rabbit hole... I went looking for good cameras and discovered a lot I didn't know that goes with planning and implementing a good system. The biggest take-away for me is determining what each security layer or camera is intended to do using the DORI (Detect, Observe, Recognize, Identify) standard.
One option is motion activated lights to illuminate the area for each camera to obtain a better image, presuming they work well during the day. The lights can cause issues with some cameras that take a few seconds to switch from night to day settings so you may lose some footage during the switchover.
Another option is tweaking camera settings or possibly upgrading your DVR/NVR to a newer model with more settings to try and improve your night recordings.
