Ceiling Craigslist Score!!

I got to work today with an email from my brother forwarding a craigslist ad he saw. My brother knows I planned on doing the ceiling in 2'x4' drop in tiles.The ad was from a week ago and I was sure it would be gone, but I called anyway and surprisingly it hadn't sold.

Left a message and the guy called back this afternoon. I went and looked at it, basically he bought it a few years ago but never put up and has since sold the house.
I got 9 new wrapped packages (576 sf) plus a few extra tiles and a probably 50 pieces
of 4' t-bar for $50. I checked the local lowes online and they had a similar tile for $37+tax per carton. Pics from the ad are included.

I was going to wait until next year to do the ceiling but now it may move up in the queue

That is a nice score. I put a drop ceiling in my basement a few years ago, and it's about the same list of materials as what you just got. It definitely cost me way more than $50. So, from my perspective, YOU ****!!!

I put a grill together for my neighbor a few weeks ago. He stopped over last night with a 6 pack and a gift card for Lowes as a "thank you". I just used the gift card to pick up all the wall molding, hanging wire, lag screws and driver for the drop ceiling project. I'll probably pick up the rest of the materials I need with a gift card i'll be getting for christmas and get this ceiling installed!

I spent the last few months getting the ceiling all finished up. It wasn't a high priority job but I did get it finished up last night. I still have to paint the pull down stairs door and the overhead door track supports. I'm very happy how it turned out and it brightens the place up for sure.


All i had to purchase was the 12' pieces of main beams and the wall molding from Lowes. I also had to get the 1/8" punch for making the holes for the rivets, screw in eyes for the hanging wire and the hanging wire.


I started out by installing the wall molding at the height below my ceiling joists that I wanted it to be. I had to be sure to provide adequate clearance for the lighting fixtures.

Had to trim around the pull down stairs

Then on to installing the main beams, and installing the hanger wire. I dropped the lights in as i went, once there was adequate support. The lights have safety chains as well since that is what they were originally installed with.

Tiles installed

I just finished the section above the heater last night and didn't get pics, but it turned out pretty good. Goals for this weekend and next week-

• Paint pull down stairs door
• Paint overhead door track supports
• Paint touchup spots on any tiles
• Clearance tiles so they dont sit up on rivets

ehh..it wasnt bad. I ended up having to use smaller pieces. I did pull the threaded rod out and put it through a single hole in the ceiling rather than doing the slots like it was in that picture.

Except for the cords in the ceiling (prohibited by the NEC) it looks good.
