I'm looking to install 60" ceiling fans http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4C721 in my 24 x 24 shop. The fans will be placed between 8' 4 lamp T8 fixtures with the fixtures being 7' apart.

Question, will a 60" fan centered between the light fixtures cause a strobe effect?

I'm thinking it won't, but wanted some input from y'all before purchasing the fans.

Probably not, strobe effect that is.

Home Depot also has a 60 inch three blade industrial fan, and its a whole lot cheaper than the Granger fan. Item number 526 012 (about $60) It does not show up on the web site at all, but I have found it in the store. We talked about it last August in this thread....

I saw a similar 3 aluminum blade industrial fan at Lowes, but it didn't seem to have much pitch. I'll run to the Home Depot over the weekend and see about the fan you posted. Do you know how much air it moves?

The reason I was leaning toward the Grainger was the 40,000+ CFM, but if the Hampton Bay you posted delivers a similar amount of air then Grainger can keep theirs!!

Note the Grainger fans are single speed, and designed to be installed from between 20 ft and 45 ft off the floor. It sounds as if you would not want it any closer than that, or you'd get blown away.

If HD doesn't give the CFMs you can compare by looking at the current draw. The Grainger fan is .96 amps/105 watts. If the HD fan comes close to this then it probably moves a similar amount of air.

I just installed 2 of the HD fans, and i really like them. Kinda odd though, setting 1 first past "off" and is the fastest, setting 4 is the slowest... Maybe I wired it wrong LOL

I bought one of the inexpensive "industrial" ceiling fans. It really spins and makes a lot of noise, but doesn't move any air. Let us know what you get and how well it works.

I have 3 of those HD fans, had them in the house and just moved two of them to the newly completed garage. The were mounted about 12' from the floor and move a lot of air- way too much for in the house. They do make a lot of wind noise on the highest level, and have a bit of mechanical noise but nothing that wouldn't be welcome in a garage. The directions don't mention it, but they can be reversed with a switch under the housing. Worth taking a look at.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

After work I stopped buy Home Depot and bought the last two 60" 3 blade fans (referenced above) they had in stock. I liked what I saw and for the price $59 I figured if they don't work out in the shop I'll just move them to the sun room.

Once installed I'll let ya know how they work!

I have the same thing in my 30x40x12 garage. Put three of them where I will be doing the majority of the work. They really move a lot of air. Even 12' off the ground.

As for switching directions. Under which housing???

The housing just above the fan blades (not the one near the ceiling)- mine are one screw. Not a big deal given you really only need to change fan direction twice a year (if one really needs to bother at all). I just got mine re-hooked up in the garage without a specialized fan switch and it turns on the highest setting which is too much air- so I need to replace those switches or add a remote- the garage has standard switches and plates and the original fan switch is Decora type.

I have six of the home depot 60" fans. Garage size is 40 by 50 with 12 foot ceilings. They are mounted between rows of flourescent fixtures. No strobing effects for me. I have the fans wired on high. I may get a speed control at some point in the future. I've been very happy with them. They move a fair amount of air and are not noisy.

Finally got around to installing the Home Depot industrial 60" fans and give them two thumbs up! They are more noisy then the fans in my house (it's a shop so who cares :)) but they move plenty of air for my little shop so I'm happy.

Thanks for the recommendation guys!
