Ceiling fan... concerned about shadows from lights above.

I am a fan of ceiling fans (no pun intended), have one in nearly every room in the house and two outdoor ones in the porch, they all run 24/7 on low or high in spring summer with windows open.

Naturally I would like to add one or two low-profile outdoor ones in the garage (23X23 with 8.5' ceiling) to remove stale air and distribute heat evenly. My concern is shadowing since I plan to have can lights in the ceiling.

Another option would be a wall-mounted corner fan, but these are usually louder and not sutiable for continuous operation.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
John

Canned lights are good for baths and kitchen but I am not sure you will like the lighting in your shop with them. I would go to 4 foot recessed floresent boxes. It gives more even light and are cheaper to run.

Canned lighting is very expensive. Years ago when they started making them they were rated for low watt light bulbs but people installed larger watt bulbs and flood lights in them. They cought on fire. The codes have changed and you will find everything is rated according to use.

You need to make sure of the rating on the canned lights. I would not want them in my shop.

Leaving your fans on 24/7 does not always help. Outside it might keep the flys away but does little else.

Hot air rises and if you want to move warm air in the winder to the floor you need to run the fan in reverse pushing the air to the ceiling. This pushes the warm air up and out to the outer walls of the room and puts the warm air back to the seating level of the room. Your furnice will run less.

Most AC and heating duct units are not installed in homes properly. Here in California they are totaly clueless. If you have an AC unit it should be on the north or east side of the house so it does not get the hot after noon sun. It is a heat exchange unit and the sun makes it hot so it will need to run longer to do its job. You can save 30% of your heating bill if the heating and cooling uint is designed properly.

With canned lighting you will find that the light does not distribute evenly leaving you in the dark. It will creat its own shadow if you don't have enough of them installed.

Check the cost. Floresent recessed lighting might be cheaper depending on the quality of fixture you buy. It will be cheaper to run

I had no idea recessed floursent tube lights existed. Tubes certainly do put out more light than hihats.

These Halo IC lights are very reasonable though. I was thinking 5 rows of 5 (25 total) in the 23X23 ceiling, 8.5' tall. They would be spaced about 4' apart. As you said, and I read in other places lighting may not be even, but spaced 4' should be OK.
