Ceiling fan install

I have 2 questions on a ceiling fan install. I got this for free off craigslist. The fan was dismounted and a bag had all the parts.

1) Does anyone know what the parts pictured are? I am guessing it is something to do with the fan blades as there are 5 of them. But...I am just guessing.

2) The way I plan to install this is to tie into a box that houses a sensor light. I was going to use wire nuts and just attache my hot, white and neutral in the box. Then come out of it with a electrical power cord, (ends cut off) or Romex. This would all be surface mounted to the drywall ceiling. It is probable a 6 foot run. Any thoughts on this.

Wiring plan is a bad Idea. Wire it to the light circuit and use the chain to turn it on and off. If you ever sell or have a electrician in it will have to be fixed otherwise.

I would do that but...Every light in the ceiling (except where the sensor light is (too far away)) is on the switch for the light. I do not want to run the lights during the day just to have the fan on.

I just took down and replaced a couple ceiling fans and one had clips like that. They hold the blades in place so they can't fly off... They should go into the metal bracket that the blades clip into, no screws to hold the blades, the blades have slotted holes.

Thanks Joel. I do have blade screws with the fan though. 3 for each blade. Also each blade has 3 holes. They are actually slots with inserts in them for the screws on the blade. That is why this puzzles me.

Fan should only be mounted to a fan mount electrical box. Standard electrical boxes are not strong enough.

I have done 5 or 6 retro-fits.

I just did a chandelier using one of these

The trick is to have the end pieces sitting like a kids swing set on the top surface of the drywall. This gives a perfect flush height for the box. I also used one of these because my hole was about 1/2 too big and the trim that came w/ the chandelier just barely didn't cover it.

Mine was more like 14 inches but be sure to get one w/ about a 3 inch center hole.
RE; electric. In our previous house I installed a fan where there was no electric box. I solved that by running a cord from the fan through a decorative chain 7 ft across the ceiling and then down to a standard wall outlet. When we sold the house there was no mention of this as a problem by the buyer's home check over man. I drilled a hole in the fan trim ring, installed a rubber grommet, ran the wire in and tired it in a plain knot so it couldn't pull through. I left about 5 inches so I could make the connection w/ wire nuts.

Yes some people may say it is bush league. But if I ever sell the house I can just disconnect it or take the fan down.
