Wanted to replace my ceiling light with a fan/light. I'm assuming it's 2 wire at the moment. Do remote controlled fans run on 2 or 3 wire generally?

When my wife and I moved into our house 6 years ago I replaced a bunch of the plain light fixtures with ceiling fans with lights.

They were all powered by the 2 wire setup from the light switches. You attach the wires from the remote sensor to the 2 house wires, then wire the remote sensor to the fans wiring, then wire the light to the fan wiring.

All the wires are there in the fan already whether you want to hook up the remote or not. A few of my fans came with the remotes and remote sensors, and I had to buy the remote and remote sensors for the remaining few. There is one fan in my wife's "craft room" that she did not want a remote for, so she uses the pull chain to turn the fan on and off.

The one thing you want to make sure of before you install the ceiling fans is that the box mounted up in the ceiling is rated to hold the weight of a ceiling fan! In some newer homes the boxes that are installed were only rated to hold a simple light fixture, and if you attach a heavy fan, it could come down!

It is really amazing all the different types and styles of fan/light combinations they have now. A nice ceiling fan really dresses up a room, and provides both light and moves the air around for comfort!!

A fan that comes with the remote will be two wire. An add on wireless controller could be two or three.
