Ceiling Fan or Wall Fan?

Looking to add either a ceiling fan or wall fan to my 20x20 garage. I have 10 1/2 ceilings with an outlet already in place but I would one day like to add a lift (of course I have been saying that for 5 years).

The wall mount fans seem pretty pricey and I assume they would need to oscillate to get good air movement.

What have others used?

I have a fan on a pedestal. Those don't cost much and can be had with a remote. It's portable and oscillates as well as all kinds of speeds and rhythms. I actually cut the post on the thing much shorter and it sits up on a shelf out of the way. I thought about hanging it upside down near a wall, but got lazy.

A guy I know bought one of those. His problem is that he could not spare the floor space.
So it turned it upside down and bolted it to the ceiling
Works great

The pedestal fan would take up too much floor space....which I have very little of left. Bolt it to the ceiling?!?! Interesting

One issue is only having power to the ceiling and not a switch. I know they have universal remotes but one fan I am looking at is unclear if it will take a remote:

The used ceiling fan is an idea....cheap and "throw away" potential.

Ceiling fan fine. Have one (10 foot ceiling, low profile hugger fan w/pull chain switch) and its on winter for heat distribution, and summer air movement.

If you don't have the ceiling clearance (I don't have a high enough ceiling) for a ceiling fan, a wall mounted oscillating fan works well. My 1950 Emerson Electric oscillator is mounted on one of the joists in the center of the garage facing the bench.

I have an interference problem with a ceiling fan (which I prefer.)
So I have a drug store fan on a high corner shelf that goes back and forth to cover the whole shop.
It is tilted up to go across the ceiling and down the walls.
It is never turned off.
The constant air movement prevents mold and rust problems.

I picked up 2 Air King 9314's from air-n-water.com and ceiling mounted one in each rear corner of my 24x24 space. They can also be wall mounted.

I was worried about making the wrong choice....I didn't. Freaking love these fans.

I installed a whole house fan in the ceiling of a pool house a couple of months ago.
They had a through the wall fan in there previously that didnt work very good because they didnt have a source to pull fresh air back into the room.
I left the through the wall fan in there to use as a fresh air supply, just unhooked the power to the motor.
They couldnt believe how much faster it cools the room down.;)

I have 3 of those ceiling fans in my 30' * 32' wood workshop and was amazed the first time I used them on how much air they actually flow. They make a world of difference they make on cooling.

I'm considering adding of the same fans to our 3 car garage. As in your case, I only have power in the ceiling. If I cannot find a remote from the manufacturer, I will use a generic plug in remote switch similar to those used in wall outlets.

Those Air Kings look nice, thanks for the link. How loud are they? Not sure what to compare the 58db rating to. Would be nice if they had one that oscillated. I'm looking for a wall mount.

Kind of a throwback to the way products use to be. Solid, heavy, industrial fan. They are not quiet, but not annoying either. Their oscillating ones are plastic wall mounts I believe - might be a better fit for you - check out the Air King 9046
