ceiling fan reverse switch relocation

I have 2 ceiling fans mounted on 6 inch downrods from my 12.5 foot garage ceiling. The reversing switch is underneath the upper cover on the top of the fan motor. To reverse it, I'll have to climb up a ladder/scaffold, lift the cover, and move the switch. I have rolling scaffolding, so it's not a big deal right now, but I'm hoping to sell that scaffolding after I get the drywall job completed.
I'm tempted to relocate the switch by extending the wires to someplace more convenient (lower) for me so I can reverse it whenever I want.

Any issues in doing this?
I'm thinking...how hard can this be? I remove the switch, snip a couple wires, **** connect some longer wires, and find some tidyway to mount a switch farther away. This sounds too easy. There must be a gotcha.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I believe you'd need 6 wires and a DPDT switch to control it.

Alternatively, you could get one of those cheap universal remote control relays and use that - less wiring involved.
