I am about to build a 40x60 with 16ft ceilings. I was planning on having to oil furnaces in the attic and run ductwork to vents on the ceiling. Will ceiling fans be able to get the heat down from the ceiling will enough? I live in Delaware.

I have a 24x30 metal skinned pole barn style shop in NC with minimal insulation. It's 12' to the bottom of the trusses but about 20' to the peak. I have a single 38" ceiling fan mounted in the dead center of the shop hanging off the bottom of a truss. I only turn it on in the winter when I'm running the heat, it's in the summer (blowing air down in the center, pulling air up at the wall) position and at low speed. I can definitely tell it's working, the air even feels warm standing below it.

MY barn is 12' to the bottom of the truss, I have 2 ceiling fans, you can tell a noticeable difference when I am running the wood stove than if the fans are turned off, it definitely helps.

My living room has scissors trusses and a 16' ceiling.

A standard Hunter ceiling fan works well. Get one with a remote so you can change airflow direction without a ladder, though.

Run it in reverse
I tried mine in reverse and it didn't seem to stay as warm. I think it was because the warm air was cooling off as it flowed down the cool barely insulated walls. With the fan running the normal direction it's warm standing under it where most of the work is getting done anyway.

Ok, so it sounds like it will work then. I was debating whether I should duct it down the walls to come out closer to the floor. I would much rather keep everything in the attic though.

I have a 40x80 with 18' ceilings and use (4) 54" on low all winter and it helps a lot.

I'm fairly confident the only reason that is common practice in winter months is because people don't want the feel air blowing on them. I'm pretty sure blowing them down is actually better for heat.

I think what you want is for the return to be low. It will **** the cold air in and pull down the warm air.

Probably better than fans, and definitely better than low output ducts
