Wanting to add a ceiling fan or two to my 50' x 80' x 16' pole barn to help circulate air inside and make it a little more comfortable on hot days. Was thinking on two 96" fans but wanted to see if there was a better option. Also, having my wedding in the barn with a ton of family and friends and want to make sure everyone is comfortable if it is hot that day.

In a building with a high ceiling, ceiling fans will make the building less comfortable rather than more comfortable. My shop has 18ft eave height and insulation typical of pre engingeered metal buildings. When its around 80-82 degrees at floor level I can shoot anything near ceiling level with an IR temp gun and the temperature there will be in the mid-90's. Fans will push hotter air toward the floor and the cooler air that's forced upward will be heated as it travels across the ceiling. It comes down to a question of which is more comfortable..... 80* and still? or 90+* with a breeze. Hard to say without knowing the humidity levels involved.

One additional factor to consider is the expected humidity.

When I lived in San Antonio (usually moderate humidity), moving air was the best choice, regardless of how hot it was. Even 95-100 degrees in the garage was tolerable if the air was moving, since the moving air and evaporation made it feel cooler. However, I now live in a location with much more humidity on most days, and moving humid air doesn't make it feel that much cooler.

I also saw many outdoor events where they rented a large floor fan (48"?) that included an evaporative cooler (it just ran water across a grid) in front of the fan. It might work to cool down selected areas (e.g., dance floor) for a wedding reception. One common brand is Porta-Cool.

My suggestion is get ones that are reversible so you can push that heat down towards you in the winter.

Big *** Fan makes a fantastic product. They are a bit spendy tho.

Nowadays, there are some competitors, so you have options.

Maybe try the wall mounted fans that they sell at farm supply places, usually around $80 and they can really move a lot of air.

My garage is considerably smaller(30 x 40), and I have two 60 inch fans, but I air condition the whole garage, including the back room.
