How much does location matter. 40 wide by 30 deep shop. Going to center them as much as possible, but it will be a little uneven. Planning on 2 56" fans with a 12" drop rod

Amazing how fast you run out of ceiling when planning lights, cord reels, heater, ceiling fans air lines etc.

Look on Craigslist for ceiling fans. I bought two five blade fans for about $25. Location is less important, but, I did install a fan near each end of the shop to keep the air moving and avoid stratification. This has worked for me.

Location matters but it’s more important to get the air moving.
In my last garage I hung a floor type cage fan inside down on a pivot so I could rotate it to the area I was working

I have a single 54" ceiling fan mounted near center about 10' off the back wall so it is just forward of my wood stove. When it's on, there is very little temperature difference from about 4' off the ground up to the mezzanine with only the ceiling finished and insulated. That is with 16' walls.

I doubt you really need more than one unless you want totally equal temperature everywhere. Based on my experience with this one, I'd put it away from where you work since even the air temperature you want will feel cool when your are right in the breeze. I guess multiple fans at lower speed would reduce the wind factor but I found one is definitely enough for 32x36 of open space with 16' ceiling. I just used the 16" or so rod it came with. https://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/56-in-industrial-ceiling-fan/A-p0771733e

Thanks Chilliwack, mine will be fully insulated but only 13.5' ceilings.

I have 2 reasons for fans. Get the heat off the ceiling, and too aid in drying. Too much snow round here to say something with snow on it won't be pulled in.

I just installed my second fan in a 32'x56'x13.5" ceiling...pretty equally spaced. But it's amazing how you can feel the air movement on the lowest of the three speeds. Makes a difference.
