Ceiling Garage Storage DIY

I am looking to add more storage to my garage... more so I want to move Christmas items out of my shed into my garage to free up room.

I am thinking of two 4'x8' sections hanging from the ceiling above my garage door.

The items to store are all in standard Rubbermaid totes as that's the only clearance i'd have.

I am a DIYer so wondering if anyone know of any good examples to share.

I have a welder so I could make something out of some simple angle or tube stock with a plywood floor or wire mesh floor.

Assuming it is a gable roof garage with a completely open interior and that you do NOT have trusses.

You will likely have a 2x6 joist running side to side at either 4' or 8' from the front wall. You will need to buy some 2x4 to span between the front wall and the first joist. These should be spaced 24" OC apart. Connect them to the front wall (there is likely a large board over the garage door called the header) and the joist with 2x4 "joist hangers". Pay the money and buy the special screws to install them.

Make sure the top of the 2x4 you install is flush with the top of the joist and level to the front. Install 1/2 plywood or OSB on top of the 2x4s. You don't need a lot of nails/screws to hold it down, just enough to keep it from moving.

This will easily hold a couple hundred pounds. (My son is 200 lb and he was laying on it while nailing it down.)

I made mine out of 2x4 pressure treated wood with those cheap 23/32 plywood for top.

and 5/8 thread rod, oversize 3/4 nut weld to a 3/16 3"x3" steel square holes drilled to attached to wood with 3/16 lag screws and beams for leveling and hanging. worked for me... holds about 3 or 4 of me no issues.

Maybe you can do a lighter version if you can find the metal cheaper. For me its just cheaper with wood.

get something like this if you don't have an open ceiling to hang it.... those electrical struts....

My neighbor has 2 bluehawk overhead storage systems like what your talking about, you can get them at Lowes for $60 bucks, I don't know if you could build them for that when including your time to fabricate. They store 6 totes on each one if I remember correctly. Good luck. METALMOVER

I put a single level /layer against the wall on the exposed rafters and a double row towards the middle. I started above the garage door to use that wasted air. With the exposed rafters I just cut 2x3 to length and a 1x4 in a "t shape" and 4 inch lag screwed to two rafters. With a helper I cut and pre drilled placed the lag screw and placed both rows in about 3 hours. They are mainly for light weight bulky stuff, Christmas stuff and some camping gear, off season deep storage.

In our old place, I hung my workbench from 4 cables attached to (recycled) winches from the ceiling... Had to to make enough room to park one of our vehicles in it. It was kinda Rube Goldberg-esque, and had to put down 4x4 legs to make it solid while down, but it worked.

You're going about your idea BACKWARDS . . . anything house related or decorations need to be LEAVING the Garage and Going TO THE SHED !!

I'd cut off roof to shed (ADD another 4 feet vertical) for a 2nd story on shed . . .
. . . . then re-attach the roof !!

Never, ever, NEVER agree to bring the wifey's X-mas decorations into the garage !!

Well, I have to admit that the Xmas stuff is mine. I am one of those guys that puts up lights controlled by a computer and sync'd to music via FM radio. That said, keeping in garage is better for me. Keeping in the shed it turns out into more back and forth, etc.

If I could have built a bigger shed I would have but you know how building codes are!

I was thinking of doing two 4x8 platforms using angle stock and 3/4 ply.

I am not sure how much the angle stock is.. probably about $20 for a '10 section.

I would just have to figure out my ceiling mount approach.
