My three car garage is now ready for paint. The side walls will be Mobil paint scheme-lower half medium gray, upper half very light grey with red stripe in the middle. The ceiling will be white but debating to use gloss or semi gloss.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Jack

My vote's for semi. Any imperfections in the finish of the ceiling will be magnified the glossier the paint. Semi-gloss will still give good light reflection without highlighting any imperfections.

Usually you go one step less glossy for the ceiling. Dirt and scuffing are less of a problem with an upside-down surface.

I thought I heard somewhere flat white paint is actually best for light reflection...is there any truth to this?

Any "Ceiling Paint" you buy is flat. I say that there is a reason for that, although I am not sure it is for a "light reflection" standpoint or a "hide imperfections" standpoint.

Ceilings look best in flat. There is no reason to use gloss or semi gloss.

As stated above, the glossy paints show imperfections the worse.

Also, you usually dont have to worry about scuffs or spills on the ceiling. Unless youre building a volcano like Peter Brady.

Personally, I cant stand shiny paint. On the walls or anywhere. Looks cheap to me for some reason.

The only thing shiny in a garage should be the cars/bikes.

I prefer semi glass myself, unless you are planning on welding in your garage. Then I would probably go with a flat paint. A gloss or semi can reflect the light into the back side of the helmet and hurt the eyes. When I was in the Navy they had to have the gloss paint in the weld shop and wondered why they were having such a problem with eyes being burned. Finally they listened and went to a flat paint and the problem pretty much went away.

ceiling paint is always flat just buy ceiling white it will say it on the can. you want the light to be defused and not in a beam. gloss will beam it depending on the light source and where it hits the ceiling. works like a magnifying glass. you want the light to be defused all over the garage and not concentrated.

I went high gloss white on the ceiling.....but I also have texture paint up there as well. This hid the 'few' imperfections and does a great job of breaking up the light reflections....no issues with glare.

On the side walls I went with semi-gloss....'outdoor' paint....I figure it will tollerate the abuse better.....and so far I'm glad I went that way.....

I used a heavy nap roller to apply both the primer and paint...hence, the finish is not real smooth (good thing) and little to no reflection....and because of the semi-gloss nature, stuff does not stick to it as well....one of my big issues in the garage is sawdust....I do a lot of wood working...I don't have as big of an issue with dust on the walls....cleans up a lot easier....

Once my painter primed the sealing you could see all the areas where the drywall guy did do his job. Next time I'll do it my self and do it right!

I went with a flat white and looks good!

Jack, What paint codes are you using for your garage? I am planning to paint mine before the end of the year following ing the same paint scheme. If you have already determined the paint colors you are ahead of me. It will certainly save me some time.

I am also considering throwing in some blue as seen on some of the old stations.

Thanks

The flater the paint the better it hides the subsurface. I vote Semi. I used Behr's new primer in the Paint (Most Expensive) Semi Gloss. I was originally going to go with the Satin and I thought with the primer in the paint, maybe I could bump up of gloss step...

I would go with an Eggshell one or two steps below semi.
Gloss, Semi , Satin, Eggshell, Flat. pretty sure it goes like that.
