ceiling height rafters question

I am building a one car shop 16' wide and 22' deep. I want to have a high ceiling so I could lift a conversion van on a two or four post lift. My plan is 4' foundation above floor grade, plus a 8' 6" 2x4 wall, rafters span the 16' for gable end entry. Roof pitch of 10/12 or 11/12. Rafter ties up at 15' from floor for ceiling. I planed for 16" oc for studs and rafters sheathed with osb or plywood. So far I have done all the site and foundation myself and plan to do this framing.

I have seen garages here with this rafter construction although not as tall. I welcome your comments on this. I will be reviewing my plan with the town building department before I build it. My original plan was to purchase trusses but this seems better, less expensive and taller!

A scissors or vaulted parallel chord truss would give you the maximum inside height.

The cost of trusses is usually made up in labor saving. Putting trusses on top of a 12' high wall is a job for more than 1 man ! 2 or 3 at a minimum. Some kind of a boom lift would help a lot.

For that height and pitch, I'd be thinking about a truss and rental on a crane. You'll be 12' up on a ladder just setting the heels and with no joists at the plate level to use for a platform, you'll need scaffolding or something else just to work at that height. Your roof peak is nearing 19' on a 10 pitch. Good luck roofing that thing LOL. If you do decide to build in place, then be sure you allow for the additional loads present on the rafters and the top of the wall when you elevate the rafter ties. And why cut 6" off every 9' 2x4...? Extra work and tossed $. Unless you plan to use full 8' studs with a single plate and double top, then you're at 8' 4 1/2".

I agree trusses would be less labor. I thought I could get more height and insulate easier with my plan. I may need a lift or scaffolding and a little help to build it.

I was gonna use full studs and double plate top and bottom. I have two portable sheds here that are not much smaller with gambrel roofs and hardly any support (collar tie/joist) with 2x4 rafters. I was going to use 2x6 rafters and collar ties. I don't really expect snow will stick with the steep pitch and metal roof so not much added load.

Theoldwizard, where did you get that rafter picture? I tried to save it to my iPad but it doesn't save properly. Could you PM me, and possibly email me a copy? Or even post the link to its location?
