Going to be building a new shop, 36 wide 42 deep, what kind of ceiling height do i need for a hoist , will be putting 3/4 ton trucks down to small cars.

12' or so is what I recommend. 14' is nice if you can get it. A lot depends on the style of ceiling. If it is vaulted you can get away with lower at the eaves.

Choose a lift first, and then see what the minimum required height is for that lift. Some "standard" 2-post lifts won't quite fit under a 12' ceiling (Atlas PVL10 = 148", BendPak XPR-10S = 145", for example). I am planning a garage with a 13' ceiling so I have a wider variety of lifts to choose from.

Also, you will want to find out from the local authorities if there is a height restriction on "accessory buildings" where you live. At my location, the height limit is 18'.

Have you considered scissor trusses? Mine has 12’ walls with scissor trusses- 2/12 ceiling- the farther the lift is from the eaves the higher the ceiling is.
