Ceiling Insulation Idea

So I am planning to insulate my garage, and am trying to do it for as little as possible with maximum effect. For the ceiling I am thinking of putting up some strapping perpendicular to the rafters. On that I would place 1" sheet foam insulation, and on top of that regular batting. Originally I was thinking of putting up OSB, but thats a lot of extra work (drywall lift, cutting out for obstacles etc) and money.

Any reason the above wouldn't be a good idea?

I believe the sheet foam is highly flammable, besides that I can't see any issues

The sheet foam would not be a good permanent ceiling material. That being said it will be my only ceiling for a while due to cost. I plan on covering it with roof tin eventually. How high is your ceiling? The higher the better.

I did something very similar to what you asked but went one step further. I first stapled heavy mil plastic sheeting to use as a vapor barrier, then I used the 1" thick styrofoam that came in 4'X8' sheets that is held in place with 1"x2" firring strips that are screwed into the rafters to support it all and then I rolled R-30 pink unfaced insulation between the rafters in the attic on top of the plastic sheeting I stapled up. My last step is to use some stuff called FSK foil to cover the styrofoam and to act as a reflection barrier for the heat and it is flame proof. Up to this point, my garage is very toasty when I push the temp on the heater. My ceilings are 10' high and I heat my garage 24/7 with a Mr Heater Big Maxx 45000 btu heater during the winter months at 48* unless I am working on my car or truck.

If I may ask, what does that cost you to keep at that temp a month. How big is your building???

I use propane and runs about 60-80.00 a month for about 2 months and if the weather starts to warm into the upper 20's and 30's, it run about 50.00 a month. Last year it cost me about 320.00 for the season from late November to March. The building is 24x32 with 10' ceilings.

Thanks for the reply. Ive got real close to same size garage, but I am going Electric. Here in Western KY, it dont get as cold as Northern Ohio......hey its going to be 61 here on News Years Eve..........lol
