I have thought about that but in my buddies new building the vinyl backing seems pretty thin.Have you looked to see if you can get that insulation they use on PreEngineered Metal Buildings (PEMB)?
I'm looking at a complex right now that has a few air-conditioned PEMBs from the 70s and that's what they have. It looks like 2-3" fiberglass insulation in a vinyl blanket.
What about continous insulation (C.I.), attached directly to the underside of those roof purlins? (not cut between them) XPS board, taped with Tyvek tape will act like layer that will effectively stop vapor transmission and minimize thermal bridging. How much R-value are you thinking? XPS is going to be pretty expensive too, depending on what you need/want. 2" XPS x 4x8 looks like is around $40 per sheet locally, which is R10.I have thought about that but in my buddies new building the vinyl backing seems pretty thin.
