Good Morning All,

I've built myself a 40' x 32' x 14' garage (girlfriend calls it the Taj Garage)

Getting ready to run wires for my ceiling lights. Right now I'm running the husky temp lights, working well as can be.

Would like LED lights that can be plugged into an outlet

I tried to read the sticky write-up's, but I'm getting a headache trying to process all the data

I'm looking for someone who has installed lights in a similar situation.

The garage will be used for personal vehicle maintenance, wood working, and winter ******** games.

Thanks for any and all input

I have a 30 x 40 x 14, white metal ceiling and white walls. I used 12 - 2 tube 4' fixtures with LED bulbs. They are direct wire and not high bay.

As others have noted, most places code is all outlets to be GFCI. I did corded in the attached garage but that was before the GFCI rule changes.

Really depends on how much light you want. I think mine is plenty bright. Some people seem to want tanning booth levels. :) If I end up wanting more in some specific area I can add something for that.

Just looked at your pics again and with lumber and open ceiling high bays may be more appropriate. And you will need more lighting since the surfaces are darker and less reflective.

Generally if you are doing detail-oriented work such as woodworking, you want the area to be lit well. If you are using one of the modeling programs such as Visual3D or Dialux, typically 93 fc is the goal for that kind of work.

Many large industrial/commercial installations use cord-connected fixtures and you can order many highbays, strips, and other industrial fixtures with a cord and plug already attached, or add your own. Most of these fixtures are designed to be chain or pendant hung, and some like strips that are generally surface mounted can be hung by a chain as well, although you would have to order the chain hanging kit to do so. So, what I would do is look to see what others used to light a 30x40x14 and decide which of the options you like, and then order them with a cord and plug or add one yourself.

With 14' ceilings you are going to be using either smaller highbays (somewhere in the 10,000-14,000 lumen range for LEDs) or strip lights. I used T8 strip lights for my 80x50x14 and am happy with the results. At that height, there are a lot of options as that height is in the overlap region between "low bay" and "high bay" and either kind of fixture can be made to work. Just avoid the more powerful highbays meant to be mounted a lot higher and you'll be fine.

You can accomplish GFCI protection two different ways, you can either use a GFCI breaker and then use regular outlets, or you can use a regular breaker to feed a GFCI receptacle (which has to be easily reached from somebody standing on the floor, so put it on a wall), and then connect the ceiling receptacles to the output of the GFCI receptacle.

My shop is 40x66x14 ,so about twice the size. I used 8 Rural King 22k high bay LEDs ,plenty of light for these old eyes. You may be able to get by with half as many. I used 8 outlets in the ceiling split them on 2 switches. By using outlets and plug in lights I can quickly add more down the road if wanted.

I caught the lights on a sale. Gave 60 apiece for them, at that price I bought a dozen

No problem. They put out plenty of light with unfinished walls as seen in the picture. If you are going to have finished walls with white paint, I would highly recommend running some 18/2 thermostat wire for 0-10v dimming along side the nm-b when you're wiring them. I hardwired mine on two separate 15a circuits. 6 lights on each circuit. They are too high wattage fixtures to run 12 on a single 15a circuit, but you could run them on a single 20a circuit. I liked the idea of having two light switches. I think they'll be too bright with white walls and no dimmer. I just got drywall done and will be reinstalling the lights in the next few weeks and I can update this thread with another picture if you'd like to see the brightness with white walls.

Hey I think I know this garage haha! My buddy has me sold on some LED high bays that he just installed in a grow facility down towards the cape. They are relatively cheap at 80 bucks or so a piece and super bright. We are going to do 8 in my place on two different switches. I can get you the info if you haven't purchased yet.

For minimal shadows I recommend 4 bulb t8 fixtures with led tubes.
You can find the fixtures free or next to free. Easy to convert the fixtures to accept LED bulbs. Bunch of videos on YouTube

I recessed mine.

I have the exact same size shop with the same layout as you, except 13' ceiling. I used 12 of these:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/EnviroL...-with-5-ft-Cord-and-Plug-HB218DMDPE/306518937

There are a lot of brands of fixtures like this. They are very bright. You could go with less lumens per fixture or run a 0-10v dimmer. I wouldn't do anything less than 12 evenly spaced fixtures.
This the correct way to do it :rocker:
With 14' ceilings you want no more than 14ft between fixtures for even light distribution and minimal shadows.

Try https://www.ledlightingsupply.com/110-watt-led-linear-bay-fixture-replaces-250-watt-metal-halide I believe they are the distributor for
ASD Lighting 120 Shawmut Rd Canton, MA 02021
ASD-WHB5-2D11050W-PRM

No reason to fart around with junction boxes and ceiling outlets. The fixture is the junction box. Jump power from fixture to fixture and you're done.

I have a similar shop size - 30x60x14 and went with 12k high bays. I added plugs to each and installed outlets on the ceiling. Ive finished the first 9 and the lighting is great, no shadows and well distributed. I was worried about the glare but they are high enough that its not an issue.

Can you share what fixture you used? I have a 36x56x14 that needs new lighting.
