I have read one watt per square foot as pretty good start. Thinking 15 eight foot 4 lamp T-8 fixtures. It will also depends on your usage. If your doing surgery you might want to increase the number of fixtures. You will get lots of opinions on here.

To light your garage, you need six 6 lamp T5HO luminaires which will achieve 57 footcandles. This will be a little brighter than your average Walmart. If you want to take it up so it's a workable place for cars, you can make it brighter by using eight 6 lamp T5HOs which will achieve 77 footcandles. This will be about as bright as a Lexus service bay. Here is the fixture I believe would work best: https://www.accessfixtures.com/6-Lamp-T5-High-Bay-Fixtures-p/af66-6-t5ho.htm

Good luck with your project! Take care.

Steve I have a garage with 15' cieling and walls painted white and a white metal cieling. It is 30 wide and 40 deep. It has 10 , 8' fixtures that are 20 years old. They are placed in 2 rows of 5 from front to back.
What would be the best fixtures to replace all of them and where would you mount them? I have a couple of T5 at work and they are brite !!
Thanks
Matt
