Hi,

I'm planning to put a ceiling up in my barn now that spring is coming around. I have some questions and welcome input from those experienced.

I'm pretty set on going white steel sheeting as it is light weight, bright for light reflection, and will hold insulation fine with my 2' spread trusses. so with white steel sheeting assumed I have general questions below. The sheeting will be going the length of the 40' direction to be perpendicular with trusses for nailing or screwing.

1. Screws. They will be into the wood truss. What kind and size of screws. Screw into every truss or every 4'?

2. Sheet lengths. I see places like Menards sells precut sheets of 8,10,12', etc. If i did pre-cut id had to go 12' i suppose to be safe and have a little extra in case right? Or do I go with the option length of my choice (e.g. 2x21' or 3x14' per sheet column hung)? I believe the width is standard like 36" or something.

3. Ceiling before walls? I'm anxious to get my ceiling wiring done for my lights, and get lights up! Due to that i need to put the ceiling up. so i can hang lights. Is it ok to do the ceiling first and the walls second and just somehow seal stuff in the upper edges later?

4. Plastic vapor barrier. What mill or type of vapor barrier should i put up against the trusses before the sheeting gets screwed in? Above the barrier will be insulation batts or spray eventually.

5. any suggested vendors for the sheeting such as menards, lowes, home depot, online somewhere, someone that prints sheets, etc?

6. lift mechanisms. ive seen some list devices for rent at places like menards. im sure they will help a bunch. what type of lift mechanism should i rent, build, or buy? just a standard drywall lift or something? my barn is packed (my fault) so ill be moving **** around, doh.

thanks all for your input. if i need to add details please let me know.

1. I think I used 1 1/2" or 2" screws. They make screws for ribbed metal with a colored head to match the metal. If you don't have an impact driver, now is the time to buy one.

2. Are you going to have help with longer sheets ? How long of a sheet can you haul ?

3. I used OSB on my walls so I did them first and added the J-channel to the walls for the ceiling. I also used a siding brake to build my own J-channel, which I made slightly larger than a "stock item."

4. Opinions may vary on the vapor barrier. If you were to have insulation first, I'd use kraft-faced insulation. If done later, some use blown in cellulose. If it's the latter, I'd want something up there under the metal in case you need to pull a sheet down for some reason.

5. I bought my metal at Menard's and got a 2% rebate on the purchase. If you buy it from them, hold out for an 11% sale. It can be ordered in any length but it'll take a week or two. Keep in mind it'll come from Holiday City, Ohio. That's not terribly far from you. I think I ordered on Sunday and was picking it up on a Thursday.

6.Drywall lift will work wonders. You may need to buy an extension for 14' ceilings or fab something up.

Thanks for your reply.

2. the more i can do myself i would. so im guessing smaller sheets is where youre going with this in that case? but i could get some buddies over to do the work with me if there is a significant savings in larger sheets.

3. i also will be going osb for walls but im not sure if i must do it first or 2nd? id like to get the lighting in place and then take my time on walls as i get time. could it be done ceiling first or a bad idea?

4. i do have the option to insulate from underneath using kraft batts if its recommended, then even could toss up a vapor barrier anyway or just skip it if kraft batts? is this methos a better option because batts are cheaper or something and i have access right off the "batt"? (pun intended)

I installed my metal ceiling to the ceiling beams (2x6's) that run between my trusses. The metal sheets were 20' and 22' long, the building is 42' wide so when placed inline they cover the 42'. The panels are attached with white diaphragm screws at each ceiling beam which were set 24" O.C. I did not use a vapor barrier per the suggestion of the kit supplier. I installed the ceiling before the walls (still have not put the walls up yet.) I am very happy with my choice.
