Ceiling Options

My garage is unfinished. 22x60. The walls are rocked and insulated.

I ran furring strips across the rafters creating a level grid, very time consuming. I was going to sheetrock it after insulating. However I saw the modular cielings HD offers, not suspended but they are of similair material.

You mount the strips and the "tiles" slip into the strips.

Any thoughts?

I looked at that system a month or two ago. Seemed like a good system until I looked a little closer. If one of the tiles breaks or you need to take one out, it looks like you would have to start on one side of the garage and take tiles out all the way across the the ceiling to get to it. From looking at the installation instructions, you put in one tile and snap the grid around it, then move on the the next tile and repeat. I don't think you can just pop out a tile like on a regular drop in ceiling.

I've got that ceiling system in part of my garage (only got it at Lowe's) & you're right...I needed to remove part of it to open a wall into a new addition - pain in the ****! But, I'm going to use it in other parts of the garage anyway.

I'm using corrugated metal for my ceiling pannels...mostly because it looks cool and I don't feel like taping, mudding, sanding, painting a 15' peak ceiling!

That Zip-Up ceiling system looks great, and would allow easy future access to in-truss mechanicals
Has anyone gone this route, and if so can you report your installation and subsequent impressions?

I am trying to figure out my ceiling finish as well. In fact, I was just at Lowes last week and picked up some info on the direct mount ceiling mount system and I had the same concerns. I'd like to avoid drywall and do the job myself.

JMURiz, where did you get your corrugated metal from, how about the gauge thickness and can you cut it easily around light fixtures and so forth?

Sorry, should have stated that I have yet to purchase/install the metal.
I'm still waiting on my building inspection to pass before I get going on the good stuff.
You should be able to get corrugated metal from any building supply place, even home depot. I would go thinner than thicker on the gauge too...doesn't need to be strong, ya know. I will put some double bubble foil insulation behind it too, for radiant heat insulation.

That ZipCeiling is neat - I'm just a bit concerned about a plastic ceiling with the potential for fire...

I'm currently putting this stuff up in my downstairs shop - essentially galvanized metal roofing like JMURiz is using but I liked this style more than the corrugated. Plus, Lowes was closing out stock of it and I got it for 60% off...

I believe that the ZipCeiling has undergone fire testing at a laboratory, not sure what the rating is.

I can take a look at the stickers on it, but they were clearing it out last winter - February ~ March or so - and I got what I needed. Haven't seen it since at Lowes.

To fasten, I'm using the metal siding screws with the neoprene washers. Wouldn't necessarily have to use those because it isn't like I'm trying to make it weatherproof, but it looks "right" that way.
