Old house, owned by me for 3 years. 1 stain dinner plate size has been repainted 6 months ago. Now brown stain appears again. Roof does not leak insulation added 3 times over the years. Attic is well vented & appears to be dry. Any issues I have missed??

I had this with a popcorn ceiling.

I used Killz spray can on it and it took a couple of coats but the stain is now gone and the satin white of the Killz was a close enough match that I didn't have to paint the ceiling.. A few years later I did repaint and painted the ceiling too - then we threw out all of my wife's candles... Soot.

I was the carpenter, for a General Contractor, who had to do punchlist for a 550 condo construction project, lots of ceiling stains. We used a 50/50 mix of clorox and water in a pump spray bottle to kill the stain then when dry used kilz spray . Then usually had the ceiling repainted. Worked on flat and popcorn ceilings.

I was a painter for 20 years. Kilz is the best for it. If you are painting the whole ceiling just use an interior oil primer thinned down as it will be much cheaper than Kilz.

We use this for acoustic ceiling tiles in our stores, its not always a perfect match but it matches better than the stain and is designed to spray up. You need to practice so you can feather the edge and make it less noticeable. Just an option.
