Ceiling Storage recommendations?

Thinking of just using 2x4 and creating a shelf across the garage above the garage door going wall-to-wall. Lots of youtube videos of others doing this. Any other suggestions? Looking to put a lot of things that I don't use often.

Above the garage railing it's about 6' up to the ceiling.

Any alternative ideas anyone can recommend?

OP . . . . you do know, don't you, that in California . . . .
. . . . . you'll have at least a couple Structural Engineers sign off first . . .
. . . . . . . . AND . . . . get building permits to do ANY of that !!! :D . . ;)

Oh don't remind me! Regulations up the wazoo! Haha.

Garage is typical two-car garage width (forgot the exact measurement as will need to re-measure) with about 2' to the right and 2' to the left of the garage door where the wall is. I was thinking going wall-to-wall, and considering to not put things too heavy up there though maybe that's a large risk since I definitely don't want it crashing down on my car. Haha.

If I decide to store near the ceiling, I'm thinking that Unistrut is the way to go.

I like unistrut with plywood shelves. I've seen some where the joints are bolt together pre-made units but I did mine by just welding.

Great ideals the unitstrut. Looks much cleaner than using just 2x2 or 2x4. Looks more professional. I wanted to do something like that since I have 6' of height to work with. Also looks more solid with the full crossbar bolted to the ceiling joists as opposed to some of the retail brands with smaller brackets on the ceiling. What type of weight do you have on there?

PD: i used 2 x 4's in the past and when it got over loaded which is bound to happen the cross boards sag. i had them up for maybe 20 years and took them down about 7 years ago to work out in my garage.

I'm thinking of building them again and Unistrut is what i was thinking of using with plywood for the shelf. mine will probably be 8 x 8 foot and hold probably lumber, plumbing and other materials this time instead of kid's stuff.

do you really need a permit for storage in California or was that a joke?

good luck

If you add shelves there, then won't you have to move them when you do your high lift conversion for the lift installation?

I prefer working with wood - and it allowed me to incorporate fluorescent lights under the main section along the back wall. I later made face frames and doors to clean it all up, but it sat with bare 2x4's like that for several years

Perfect timing for this thread! Previous owner of our house did a very "okay" job of some shelves in our garage, but "okay" will only cut it for so long. So that's on the short list of projects and I'm excited to see all of these options here, digging the unistrut, but the those wood ones by Git looks really nice with the lights underneath, that might be the ticket!

Thanks y'all!
