ceiling tin question

I'm getting closer to be able to tin and insulate my ceiling in my new shop. My question is regarding my tin installation. My trusses are 4' spaced. One person told me I need to strap with 1x4 and then tin, but another guy told me that I'd be fine with 4' spacing as is. My concern is that once there is approx 14" of blown in cellulose insulation that the tin will sag between the trusses due to the weight. Does anybody have first hand experience? I realize that I should probably just strap it and be satisfied, but doing so would cause me to run my tin perpendicular and visually I won't like it as much.....yeah silly I know.

My trusses are set to 4' spacing, tin ceiling panels are 29 gauge 20' length, and have 14" of cellulose on top of them. My building was just finished in December but no sign of sagging yet. If you use reasonably high quality panels and enough fasteners I don't think you'll have an issue.

What kind of panel is it?

I have 24ga corrugated panel on a roof at 4 foot spacing. I can walk on it (200lbs) without deflecting much (1/4" maybe).

This 24ga corrugated panel at 4 foot spacing is rated for 44 lbs/sqft uniform load. Consider a
residential floor is spec'd at 40 lbs/sqft.

24ga "PBA" panel (has more flat area than the corrugated) is only rated at 30 lbs/sqft.
Drop down to 29ga and it's rated at 16 lbs/sqft.

Your supplier/manufacturer should have load charts for this. Unless you have incredibly thin metal, or lots of flat area, you should be ok.

For what it's worth, I've got the 29 ga Dura Panel from Menards. I spoke to a rep at Midwest Manufacturing, where it is made. Since my trusses are 8' on center, he said to add a 2x4 every 48". This has 19" of cellulose on it. I also put J-channel around the top of the walls.

If I were you, and this is what you're using, I would sincerely suggest contacting them for advice. That's what they're there for. My guess is you'll be told to add a 2x4 every 8', but I could be wrong. Or if you're using something else, then call whoever made it.

Lots of good guys here, that are very knowledgeable, but nothing beats getting the info right from the horse's mouth!

My trusses are 4ft and was told to install 2x4 strapping every 2 ft mainly due to ease of tin install, not really needed for the 29g steel as it is strong enough for cellulose fill.

I was happy with the strapping, as all my 20 ft + tin pieces were pre-drilled and it was so easy not to miss a wide surface instead of a rather thin truss.

Running the tin perpendicular was not visually as bad as I originally thought. Actually looks pretty good.

I have done the Menards wall/ ceiling panels on 4 foot centers with 12-14 inches of blown in insulation and no problems. It was put up 15 to 18 years ago or more.
