Ceiling w/ metal trusses

Because I am planning on building my 40x60 pole barn in stages, I am considering using metal trusses, spaced ever 10' ft.

I want a ceiling though. Do y'all think I can run 2x's along the bottom of the trusses and hang insulation and metal ceiling panels from that? Or what would my best option be?

Sort of like that bottom board. But knotch it so it sits flush with the bottom of the truss, instead of in that cup.

Best option would be to have the truss designed for what you want to do. They will build it with minimum material = best price to do the job and support all the loads.

I built my garage that way, but used 3 posts on each side and they were 6x6 and I used attic trusses. My garage was 24x24. It's finished now. I will try and post a picture.

That is the down side of having trusses every 10'. They save you some money but you gave no support for your ceiling. Ask the manufacturer if they have an alternative.

The company designing/building your trusses can do pretty much what ever you want, you just have to tell them the load (sheathing material, roofing material, purlin size and spacing, etc, etc)

Has any one read the OP's question? He's specifically talking about "Metal" trusses every ten feet. These are not of the "will you design my truss" variety.

They are pre-manufactured by a metal truss company to a standard configuration. I suppose you could get some special features if you paid dearly for them - but why would you. These things are already a great design IMHO.

In this case there is not much need for special features if you look at the truss design (OP's included picture shows it well). There are 2" x 6" purlins on edge every 24" that can support insulation between them and ceiling panels on their bottom edge.

If it was me, I'd use rigid foam (3/4" or so with tapped seams) on the top of the purlins under the outside metal. If you want more insulation, run it laterally between the purlins, then put your inside metal on the bottom of the purlins. Done deal.

You will have great head room inside under the trusses if you want a lift or other equipment. If I was building a new building, this is the way I would go today.

To further clarify my point, the insulation and ceiling method I described would result in a vaulted or cathedral ceiling much like a scissor truss, but higher pitch.
The big advantage is that you can install a taller door on the gable end of the building than you could with conventional trusses. If you need to house an RV you might get by with 10' or 12' foot walls instead of 14' or 16' required with wooden conventional trusses.

Could you do a drop ceiling suspended from cable / threaded rod? The load shouldn't be very high on the bottom of the trusses. Figure out if those trusses can have any suspended load and see if a drop ceiling would come in under it for your size/span. Otherwise maybe you could hang Unistrut to provide structure to bolt metal ceiling panels to? In either case you'd have to find out what kind of load you can hang if any from those trusses.

The bottom of the trusses? Yep - you are correct that he did say bottom of the trusses. The bottom of the trusses in this case is not what most would think of. The bottom of the trusses is about 18" parallel below the roof profile.

I did read his post and I clarified that he would have a vaulted or cathedral ceiling - it's still a ceiling.

I'm sorry if I can't explain this satisfactorily.

It could be that I don't understand the OP's question.... does he want to have a flat ceiling at the same level as the top of his walls? If so then my explanation does not apply and I'm way off base. If that's the case then these are not the trusses for him and he should consider other options.

Otherwise I still stand by the fact that folks are not looking at the picture the OP posted. These are not intended to provide a flat ceiling and anyone seeking that end result should look elsewhere.

when stressed in a way not designed these fold up like a house of cards.... Most designed this way use refletix insulation between the wood and metal

Sorry for the confusion...

What I want to do is run 2x's from the bottom of the truss exactly like the top of the trusses. Screw my ceiling panels into those.

ask your truss supplier if the can add purlin clips to the bottom of the truss, or if they will sell you the clips so you can add and not hurt the integrity of the truss. I have seen metal truss poultry houses with drop ceilings, if there is a Latco or FarrmerBoy Ag in your area check with them.
