That was aged cellulose, not today's cellulose which is treated with fire retardants and mold resistance.

The video says "AT LEAST" 6 months old. I have no idea how this stuff is, maybe it is 5-10 years old?

It just doesn't look like any fresh cellulose that I have put in recently. The color is odd and looks very dry.

The video said it was aged "at least 6 months".
Cellulose has had fire retardant added to for years. So unless this cellulose was 10+ years old, it is today's cellulose.

Yes, and the video was produced in 2010. Regardless, my point is that if people are saying that the fire resistance is lessened over time.

Then, clearly people have a problem and a false sense of security . . .

I can agree with that. I would imagine that it would dry out over time and would lose its retardant additives (likely).

The fire retardant in cellulose insulation is boric acid. It is dry.
This is just a scare tactic published to squash the competition.
The cellulose industry has it's own "facts" that say how fiberglass is more dangerous in a fire:

I would rather see a live video showing this test. Anyone can print words and state something as fact.

Its a little harder to do when you have two identical heat sources, box's, along with a camera filming what is happening simply from a 75 watt light bulb.

Regardless of either sides hype . . . I was of opinion and view that using Roxul Safe N Sound was the only route to follow.

100% fire proof, and has all the strengths against water, mold, bugs, rodents, etc from affecting its long term characteristics.

Your really going to believe a very poorly written article on a site that is a from insulation contractor (one that strictly sells cellulose).


Funny how they state that they are using the test results from the ASTM E119-98 to backup their claim.
They state; ASTM E119-98 Tests
Omega Point, an internationally known NAVLAP certifies laboratory, completed ASTM E119-98 Fire Tests on 2" x 4" wood stud walls framed 16" OC with 1/2" Type X gypsum wallboard on both sides. The tests were performed on uninsulated and cellulose insulated wall sections.


But if you actually look at ASTM E119-98, here is what they are actually testing.
ONE-HOUR FIRE RESISTANCE TEST OF A NONBEARING STEEL STUD WALL
WITH ½” TYPE X GYPSUM ON THE EXTERIOR AND ½” TYPE X GYPSUM
WALLBOARD OVER PROTECTIVE STRUCTURES FRP PANEL ON THE INTERIOR

I read through the test and did not see where they tested both uninsulated and "cellulose" insulated walls.

I recently got bids to insulate my new home. None of the contractors I got bids from wanted to use cellulose. Main reasoning was I live in a area with a wide ranging humidity level and cellulose absorbs moisture and is slow to dry out. Mold waiting to happen. They really want to do foam, but the upcharge is to much for me.:willy_nil
