Have completed the footer and 3 courses of cmu on detached garage. My initial thought was to paint block. But now that the block is up and is alot more wall space than envisioned, I've decided to stucco the exterior. Anyone have any thoughts or advice on using portland cement or acrylic stucco? I'm liking the availability of the colored acrylics.

im in fla and i would look into waterproofing and durability of both products. in a heavy rain and puddling water will seep through regular stucco.guys that build planters up against an exterior wall have problems if they dont waterproof them. im no expert....just something to think about...good luck!

Surface bonding cement. Looks like stucco but is applied directly to the wall and if you do both sides it makes the wall 4 or 5 times stronger to side loads.

We use a product here called Fastwall all the time. Im sure in your area there's a similar product. It's available in either sanded or non. That's just up to whoever you hire and if they want to truck there own sand in. If they go the non sanded route make sure they dont add extra sand to stretch the mudd. As for a topcoat, acrylic is a great product. Don't nother with acrylic urethane. The only benefit is the uv resistance, and that is gone aftermtwelve months generally. Much less hear at our elevation. Almost all of what we do here is synthetic stucco and acrylic. We do on average 3-4k yards a month. If you have Dryvit it your area, its a great product. Sonowall is good to.
