This has probably been covered before, but didn't notice it in the 5-6 pages I've read thru (just found the site), so I'll give it a shot.

For a slab for a second garage, not connected to anything, do you need a footing around the perimeter? I've heard yes and no, also heard different opinons for slab thickness (I'm in WI, just a little south of Green Bay). I would plan on having rebar in the slab and possibly thinking of running PEX for radiant heat (not sure on this either...) I'll try to attach a file of the look of garage I'm going for, looking for the country look... Thinking of 24'W x 40' D, with either 6/12 pitch or 8/12 pitch roof, not sure yet. Also want the lean to for outside storage and when i get older just siting out and relaxing. I figured this area would be at a minimum 6' W and possibly 8' W. If finances allow I may try to strech it to a 28' x 40' but I don't think the wife will let that go. Just getting started on the planning side, so let me know what you think.

You need to talk with builders in your area and the building inspection people. Its likely you have to have a foundation that extends below the frost line. Possibly it can be a monlith pour with the slab, possibly it would have to be a separate pour. You are going to have to ask some local questions on this one.

A floating slab is OK....no need for a foundation...you're builder will do the concrete specs but most likely he'll spec the edges to be a little deeper...maybe a couple re-bars along the edges. Probably need a 3000# PSI mix...

Fibermesh is real popular in our area...you really don't need wire or rebar in the garage.

I've got 4" with fibermesh in my 30X50...a 9000# lift...a 1500# mill...a 2500# ironworker...no problems yet.

You need to ask your local building inspector about this. Codes can vary from town to town, never mind state to state. In the town I live in any garage bigger than 28x28 must have a 4' frost wall. Any garage with a second floor, no matter what the size must have a 4' frost wall. Get the facts from your local inspector and go from there.

At the least you'll need to thicken the edges of the slab or you'll have cracks in the slab.

Think about it for a second. The entire weight of the garage is being transmitted thru the walls down to that slab and the walls are resting on the edge of the slab.

Like the others said, talk with the inspectors etc. Might as well err on the side of caution though, don't want to redo it down the line.

Hey URY, didn't know you were on here, shouldn't you be finishing up the 914s paint instead of chit-chatting on this forum, haha.

I would love to be at home working on my car, but I gotta be at work now.
I said at work, not working. Tonight I'll be busy on the car.

They poured mine the end of Dec and had a footing and then the slab. If you are planning on using the garage a lot then from what I have heard the radiant heat floor is a good option. I din't do it on mine, but I might end up wishing I had.
