Center finding punch.

Don't know if i have the right name or not.

Its a tool mainly used in layout. You'd put the tool over a lets say a 1" hole, push it down(has a spring that will center the hole) and smack the pin part and you have the center of your hole on your material underneath.

Anyone understand me or am i talking out of my ***?

There's transfer punches (mentioned above by PAPERMAKER and most likely what you are talking about) and optical punches which are handy items also.

No fella's. Its a short stubby round thingy with a pin going right through the middle.

Transfer punch. There are different styles available.. You're most likely thinking of a hinge punch.

I forget the model number, but Google the one made by Starrett. If you are looking for high quality, you won't be disappointed.

Is your "material underneath " cylindrical? If so then I know what you're talking about. I have one in my tool box. It's ideal for pipe fitting.
