I've done it and it works great. I know it's not "dust collection" in the big shop sense but mine has worked fine and sucked hard with a few lines and blast gates.

My top tip is grab an outdoor light remote and plug your shopvac into it. Then you can turn on the system with the wireless remote wherever you are in the shop. Mine cost me less than $20 and has been worth many times that for convenience.

I have a VacuFlow whole house vac in the garage. It doesn't work for **** for 'dust collection' - I mean it will do the job if you want to just vacuum out your car...

It's spec'd at about 125 Cubic Feet per Minute which looks to be about the same as that system tarmy posted. (That's before any loss due to 30 to 40 feet of corrugated hose, 90 degree elbows etc.)

Here is just a rough indicator of the amount of CFM required for these machines (do you see anything around 100 CFM?

In comparison, a Ridgid shop vac is at about 143 CFM

You would be better off trying to rig something up with the Harbor Freight Dust Collector (1,550 CFM for $210)

Agree whole house vac is great for the home/garage vacuum to clean the floor or car.......they are NOT designed for a dust collection device.

So the opposite is true dust collection system would make a poor vacuum for the car or home.

Shop vac can do both with severe limitations on size and distance.

Typical whole house vac might have 110 cfm with 100” water lift rating 1.25 to 2” pipe
Typical dust collection might have 1100 cfm with 3-4” pipe.

id be mostly using it to vacuum cars and saw dust here or there

Shop vac should work fine but most shop vacs are tuned for a given short hose length .........you will see less “vacuum power” the longer the run and some point there’s a huge drop off. Best example of the power loss is hose change from 2” to 1.25”. The motor makes far more noise but the work being done is far less.
