CFL Bulbs: Inductive Load?

Hi Evernyone:

Here is my first post. Can anyone verify if the Intermatic T101 timer can be used for CFL bulbs? The manual for this timer indicates it can be used for resistive, inductive, and tungsten applications. I am planning on using it for turning on and off my exterior garage lights.

You're fine, it's a mechanical switch so no real issue. My parents have the same timer on their garage and have been using CFL's for years.

Yup, mechanical contacts on that are rated for 40A. You should have no trouble with anything you throw at it. I use the same timer for the block heater on my truck.

Most CFLs with electronic ballasts present a capacitive load on the mains, and a rather "dirty" load at that. It's not generally a problem unless you have an unusually large number of CFLs. A timer with relay contacts can take the load with no problem. Controls that have solid state switching, especially two-wire devices can cause erratic operation on CFL applications in some cases.

A mechanical switch will work with any kind of load within its contact ratings. The problems today is with electronics trying to do the job. Electronic switches are never fully off or fully one, so they are load dependent on getting a light fully off or fully on. That is your failure to switch.
