CFM through Quick Connects

So Ive read an absolutely countless amount of threads on this forum and 1 thing i haven't see come up is the CFM through various quick connects.

I was a carpenter by trade and was never worried about CFM's through my various nail guns but now that im getting heavily into automotive tools, i want to see if any of you happen to know the different CFM ratings on various quick couplings.

I have 1 hose that's in the truck all the time with my portable compressor all the time and those fittings fit all the standard carpentry tools in the industry. I would like to keep those fittings in place in case i want to use that hose in the garage. I will be installing a hose real on the ceiling thats hard piped to the compressor in the garage and i want fittings that will deliver the most punch for the tools in use. I will likely make an adapter for the portable hose to fit the garage compressor.

I have been looking at all the packages for quick couplings hoping to find some sort of rating with no avail. Guess i figured that with so much concern with CFM ratings through water separators, filters, hoses, hard piping and tools, the coupler would be just as important factor.

What do you guys think?

Page 35 of the Milton catalog has the pressure drop tables for various sizes of couplers:

Below data extrapolated from the chart for Type M couplers:

1/4" coupler 22 CFM @ 5 PSI pressure drop
3/8" coupler 40 CFM @ 5 PSI pressure drop
1/2" coupler 87 CFM @ 5 PSI pressure drop

They (perhaps Milton too) makes high flow couplers too, as opposed to the standard ones.

Milton makes them too. They work fine, but they don't hold up as well as the regular offerings. The high-flow variety (V series) don't like all the vibration that air tools produce. I haven't had a plug break yet, but have had to replace a few couplers.

This reminds me of the cut-off valve I got for a garden hose at Wally World the other day. They had a brass one and I swear you couldn't get a pencil through the valve when it was fully open. The plastic one was bigger but it still cut the flow in half.

No idea if that applies to air fittings, just pissed me off.

Perfect! That's what i was looking for. I'm actually kind of surprised the small 1/4" couplings flowed so much CFM. That's good to know.

I took a pic of the Milton Type V coupler next to the standard 1/4 Type M. The brass is the standard 1/4 Type M, and the other is the Type V, it's a noticeable difference. They are available in 1/4 Npt threads and the 3/8 Npt(recommended). And of course in male and female options of each. The female couplers are also compatible with the standard 1/4 Type M male.

Even though the 1\4 couplers apparently have the numbers...they don't flow as well. Put a Type V on your drill or impact and you will notice a difference. It's like a steroid injection for your air tools.
