Chainsaw chain question

After learning how to sharpen chainsaw chains, I now have many dull chains I would like to reuse. I have noticed that the sprocket side is kind of sharp. Is that a problem with the bar and sprocket?

Over time those old chains tend to stretch; not a big deal as you can adjust the chain each time you fill up the gas tank. Be sure and keep the bar grove clean and free of sawdust as that tends to dull the drive links. You don't want to tighten that chain to much it will need a little play but do not over tighten the chain.

They don't really stretch, the pins and bushings wear out and the chain no longer fits the drive sprocket. This causes the drive sprocket teeth to wear into a hook shape, ruining the sprocket.

Are you referring to the chain cutters being sharper on one side & the other side being dull? On some chains, one side can be easier to file then the other, I've found Stihl chains can be like this.

If there is a wire edge on the bar & nose, that can be filed down and is normal, a chain that's too tight will wear the bar & nose faster.

Along with what Woody said, You also dont want to re-tension a hot chain as that will stretch it over time.

+1. Also note chain and spockets wear together. It's good to have three chain to run together with a sprocket. I typically just change chains and sharpen in the shop after dark for next time. When the chain and sockets are worn out change them all. Wearing out one chain and putting on a new or with an old sprocket wears the new chain out faster
