Chainsaw help - Kind of long

Back story:

My fiancee and I closed on our first home on June 30. Since that day I have been on a mission to bring the landscaping back from the dispair that the last owner left it in.

Fast forward to yesterday, my buddy was going to come over with his chainsaw to help finish up some of the larger trees/branches. I get a text from him midday that him and his family are going to the local fair tonight and asked if he could drop off the chainsaw so I could do the cutting and then we could do the hauling later in the week. I said "Sure, not a problem."

I get home to find his chainsaw and two jugs, one labeled "Chainsaw Gas" and the other not labeled. I open them both and they generally look the same, so I cracked open the labeled jug and begin to fill the fuel "tank." As I started to pour I noticed that it was quite viscous and stopped immediately. I called my buddy and asked him about the two jugs, at this point he tells me that the labeled jug is actually chain lubricant:headscrat

So I empty the fuel tank into a seperate container, grabbed the non-labeled jug with the pre-mix and filled up the fuel tank. I then started the chainsaw...smoked like a son-of-a-gun and never seemed to come to full power, I shut it down and put it in the garage.

So, how bad is it? Am I going to be buying my buddy a new chainsaw, getting the engine rebuilt or just simply replacing some easy/less expensive parts?

Lesson learned: When you have two jugs and you say to yourself, "I should call just to make sure." Actually listen to yourself and call before you mess it all up!:lol_hitti

IMHO, I don't think you caused any damage to the chainsaw, all you did is run the saw with an incorrect oil to gas mixture.

I once double the amount of oil I should have put in the gas, it ran a little rough and smoked like the dickens but still works to this day.

I would empty out the fuel tank, the gas that is in there should have deluted the chain oil you put in there in the first place. refill the tank and check the spark plug to make sure its not fouled to bad. It should work just fine after that.

Thanks CenTex. I did notice that the smoke faded to "normal" after a while and that it started to sound more powerful, but I erred on the safer side and just put it away for the night.

I was hoping I hadn't caused any damage as, in effect, it was just more oil than it should have had in the mixutre.

I will check the spark plug tonight and make sure that is good to go. Thanks again!

I 've done it before, It doesn't hurt.

I just turned it over and dumped it out then filled it with gas.
When your cutting alot of wood and filling the tank every 1/2 hour it happens.

It'll be fine. I did the same one night. Had a couple beers too many and it was dark. The fuel tank and bar oil tank are backward of what seems logical.

Couldn't get the saw to run, probably all that better at that point though :bounce:

Thanks guys. You have definitely put me at ease. I wasn't all that happy at the prospect of shelling out the dough for a mistake such as this, when the house, and more importantly, the garage still need some updates!

Haha, yes, at that point a fully functional saw may not have been the best thing for you. :lol_hitti
