Neighbor of mine uses a Stihl 2-in-1 sharpener and really likes it.

I need to get something and carry it with me. Subscribed for updates.

It cost me too much to get my chains sharpened relative to new. Just for fun, I tried a round file and guess what, it worked pretty well. Maybe not like new, but good enough. I would sharpen once a day, or maybe every 1or 2 tanks of gas (cutting near stones). Next, I tried a Dremmel type stone in my die grinder and had even better results. Not perfect, but the wood does not know the difference.

I bought an inexpensive electric sharpener from Northern tool a number of years ago. It is of much higher quality than the cheap HF version, and does a nice job.

I **** a hand filing, but find that a file guide, that was part of a used Stihl saw package I picked up, actually works quite well as long as the chain is reasonably sharp.

I use Bailey's for chain purchases. They sell the same electric sharpener as Northern, as well as higher end pro models.

Hand filing works great, you just have to keep up with it and sharpen your chains regularly or they will reach a point where a grinder is needed. Stihl has a 2in1 filing guide and it is excellent, It sharpens the tooth and files the depth gauge at the same time and is incredibly easy to use. here is a link https://www.stihlusa.com/products/chain-saws/filing-tools/2in1file/

I have an Oregon 505 bench sharpener with a diamond wheel. I don't use it anymore since I bought the Pferd version of the Stihl 2 in 1 filing guides. They work very well.

Just make sure to flip your bar every once in while.

Those Stihl ones work well. However they do only work on full comp chains. No semi skip or full skip for those.

The dremmel attachment is only for making the tooth sharp and not taking down the raker...so your only doing half the job. The dremmel attachment only sets the tooth gullet shape, you can do thst with a hand file and a cheap fixture.

If you’re interested in the Stihl hand sharpener, Pferd makes them for Stihl. If you can get over the lack of color coordination, the Pferd tool is a bit cheaper.

After decades of paying someone else to sharpen my chains, I saw this on utube and gave it a try. It is simple and does a terrific job. It incorporates both a round file and a flat file. I am able to give my chain a little touchup every time or two I refuel. It is a big improvement over waiting until it is dull enough to be changed out. It is simple enough that any fool can get good results.

I hand sharpen with a file. It's quick because the chain remains on the saw. The trick for me is to put the bar in a vise, and make sure I am comfortable. I use a Sharpie to mark where I start.

I use a HF sharpener when the teeth get one sided. With a coupon it was cheap. Takes a little fussing over, but the price was right and it works pretty well.

When we cut we usually have 4-5 chainsaws going and I keep 3-4 extra chains. I usually sharpen with a round file in the field if it's not too bad. If someone hits a rock or the chain gets real dull it just gets changed.

At home I sharpen with the Harbor Freight sharpener. Haven't bought a new chain in 3 years.
