me and my wife had the ideal to paint the man doors with chalk board paint for the little ones.

well the paint went a little farther than the doors. what do you all think about a chalk board/black walled garage?

I think it would make it too dark inside, unless you have reallllyyyy good lighting there wouldn't be much to reflect the light around the room.

When I get enough money saved up to build a house and a shop, I will have a ton of lighting in my shop.

I painted one of the doors on my cabinets and use that as a punch/shopping list. Also very useful for keeping quick notes.

Doesnt that just teach the kids to write on the walls? lol.

IMO lighter color walls make visibility better, same goes for engine bays

One of the main reasons we painted the door black was my wife got sick of looking and the greasy finger prints all over. My little girl love to out in the garage with me but has a small attention span.

I'm not covering the whole wall as it would be too dark. But would be great as a big parts list board.

A section of a wall perhaps - but not too much of it - although it's great to encourage creativity with lots of colors of chalk for the little ones to play with, in the interests of keeping the garage a pleasant place to work - not a dungeon - I would keep the blackboard paint in a certain area - perhaps an area with best visibility to the rest of the shop so you can keep an eye on your young artists while you work?

I painted a 5'x4' section of the garage wall down at the kids' level for their use. Plenty of room for them. And as far as doing that inside, I prefer to just blow the dust out the overhead door rather than have it in the house. I can keep an eye on them; I play while they play!

What about dry-erase material? Same use but it's white instead of black so it won't be a black hole for light in the garage.

What he said! And you can make your own. Simply paint the back side of a piece of regular glass or plexiglass white, then frame it up on the wall. Use regular whiteboard markers.

the markers have some pungent vapors for little kids, and the ink stains some clothes and isnt good for car paint in case they get carried away...

At my previous house I framed out a piece of white paneling for this purpose. It had a glossy finish to it and worked extremely well as a dry erase board. I found it at Home Depot and used it to keep notes and to sketch out wood working projects. It was about 10 years ago but I think it was only like $10-15 for a 4'x8' sheet. I'll probably do it again shortly if they still carry it.

Thinking about doing the inside of one of my rollup doors in chalkboard paint, taping off a square/rectangle. Anyone done this?

I heard about this as a dry erase paint but have not tried it:

www.ideapaint.com

Supposedly it's now available at Lowes. Seems pricey, but still much cheaper that a big whiteboard.

I just saw a story on CNBC about that on Friday - and then saw it @ Lowe's on Saturday. Wish I had known about it before I bought my 4 whiteboards - I could have done the whole wall for just a little more money. At my Lowe's they had a display board where you could try it out.
